On Abortion: OpEd: Not a reliable vote on abortion rights

At the gathering here, N.H. State Representative Daniel Tamburello said he liked Brown personally but hesitated when asked whether he would support him. "I'm a pretty strong pro-life guy, and that's usually a sticking point for me in the primaries," Rep. Tamburello said. When campaigning in Massachusetts, Brown said he favored abortion rights, although activists disputed the claim, saying his was not a reliable vote. Nonetheless, the perception here is that he supports abortion rights.

On Gun Control: Ok'd federal ban on assault weapons after Newtown shootings

Some Republicans said a bigger problem here [than missed views on abortion rights] would be his support for the federal ban on assault weapons, which he declared last year after the shootings at a school in Newtown, Conn. "Certainly in New Hampshire, Second Amendment issues are a really big deal," said [one Republican party official]. "He'd have to really address what his reasoning was for that."

On Health Care: Supported RomneyCare in 2006; it's different than ObamaCare

[At a N.H. GOP gathering] Brown tried to focus on Sen. Shaheen and linked her to what he said were fundamental problems with President Obama's health care plan. "What's really at issue is that she really needs to start explaining to people why she was the deciding vote to pass ObamaCare," he said.

"Up until it blew up, she was still one of the No. 1 supporters," he said.

"She makes no apologies for trying to help people get affordable health insurance," Shaheen's husband said. Mr. Shaheen also noted that Mr. Brown might face questions about health care himself. As a state senator in 2006, he supported Gov. Mitt Romney's health care overhaul in Massachusetts, which was the model for the Obama plan. Mr. Brown later argued that the two plans were very different, but enough similarities exist that New Hampshire's conservative voters could question whether he shares their values.

On Tax Reform: Never raise taxes in a recession; it hurts job creators

Warren portrayed herself as someone who was being honest and realistic when she said she would "raise revenues," a euphemism for taxes, and would even cut the military budget and redirect spending to education programs and improvements in the nation's infrastructure.

Brown said he would never raise taxes on anyone and particularly not in the midst of a three-year recession, because doing so would hurt the "job creators" and crush small businesses.
