On Civil Rights: Supports domestic partnerships, not same-sex marriage

Turner has said he personally supports the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. The act says no state can be forced to recognize another state's same-sex marriage license. An observer said, "Bob Turner has the same position as President Obama, [who] supports legal partnerships, [but not same-sex marriage]."

On Energy & Oil: Keystone XL pipeline & hydrofracking are key energy sources

Turner reiterated his support for the Keystone XL pipeline and for hydrofracking, both of which are controversial in the environmental movement (which, Turner said, is often driven as much or more by politics as out of concern for the planet). Hydrofracking, the congressman said, "isn't some crazy, newfangled thing. This is, done properly, a safe and effective technique. I think we can put the right controls on it and let's get to work. We're letting great opportunities go by."
