Mitch McConnell: Removed from House leadership for criticizing Trump & Jan. 6

House Republicans removed Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as conference chair in retaliation for her unyielding criticism of former President Donald Trump, his continued false claims of a stolen election, his role in the Jan. 6 riot and his future in the Republican Party. "I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office," Cheney told reporters after her ouster, which was done by a voice vote.

Cheney's removal, which was widely expected, likely marks the end of her rise in the Republican Party. Still, after [the removal] vote, Cheney appeared undeterred, telling reporters the nation needs a strong GOP--and that she plans to lead it.

[Before the removal vote], Cheney pointedly accused Trump of fomenting the deadly insurrection. Cheney added: "I will not sit back and watch in silence, while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy."

Corky Messner: Against vandalism, but take down Confederate statues

I think it's important that we look at what's going on with respect to monuments and statues and identify the various vandalism that has been going on. I think with respect to monuments to Confederate generals and honoring the Confederacy, yes, those statues need to come down. I believe that some of those statues should be in museums with full disclosure of what those folks did and what the Confederacy stood for.

Scott Pruitt: A Christian worldview means God has answers to our problems

Pruitt is a former trustee with the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and he says his faith forms the foundation of his politics. "A Christian worldview means that God has answers to our problems," said Pruitt, according to the seminary's website. "And part of our responsibility is to convey to those in society that the answers that he has, as represented in Scripture, are important and should be followed, because they lead to freedom and liberty."

Scott Pruitt: Fought removing 10 Commandments display from state Capitol

When Pruitt became Oklahoma's attorney general after the 2010 election, he continued to pursue many of these priorities. He fought a move by Oklahoma's Supreme Court to remove a public display of the Ten Commandments at the state Capitol, and he joined a lawsuit against the federal government over the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate.

Lincoln Chafee: He wrote in 'George H.W. Bush' for president in 2004

In 2004, Chafee was openly critical of his party's incumbent president, George W. Bush, even flirting with the idea of challenging him in that year's New Hampshire primary. In the election that fall, Chafee made it clear he was not voting for the incumbent, but writing in the name of his father, former President George H.W. Bush, instead.

Lincoln Chafee: Voted for Obama twice, served as 2012 campaign co-chair

In 2007, having become an independent, Chafee felt free to support former Senate colleague Barack Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination in 2008. When Obama ran for a second term in 2012, Chafee served as co-chair of Obama's successful re-election campaign. The following year, Chafee switched his registration to Democrat, while still serving as governor. He chose not to seek re-election in 2014.

Richard Blumenthal: Seven of McMahon's WWE wrestlers have died this year

McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, tried to paint Blumenthal as a career politician who has "a difficult time telling the truth," mentioning the instances when he misspoke about his military record.

Blumenthal shot back, saying he would not be lectured by someone who has badly treated her employees, bringing up how seven wrestlers have died since the newcomer politician began her quest last year to fill the Senate seat. "The people of Connecticut know me and they have taken the measure of my character over 20 years," Blumenthal said.

McMahon, who acknowledged the WWE has "pushed the envelope" over the years with its programming, said she remains proud of the company, which she said has created an average of 20 jobs a year over the last 28 years and expects to hire an additional 100 to 140 workers next year.

Wesley Clark: Neither party has a monopoly on strong leadership

Q: Is the country more comfortable in times of crisis with a Republican president?

A: I think that’s a Republican party mantra. The Democratic party has been the more internationalist party. We led US engagement abroad. But neither party has a monopoly on strong leadership. It’s time to put the ghost of Viet Nam behind us and be part of the world. We’re at a turning point and I don’t want to see a clash of civilizations. We need to create allies instead of creating enemies.

Wesley Clark: Leadership based on experience & fighting for little people

Q: How would you differentiate your leadership from the other 9 candidates?

A: All the other candidates are fine people. My leadership background is: 1) I’ve got experience. 2) I make tough decisions. 3) I fight not only for the big people but for the little people. We looked after families, school systems, and everything for our troops. I’ve got a good combination of skills in foreign policy as well as in the issues that affect everyday lives. But it’s up to the American people to judge.

Dennis Kucinich: Broccoli would be welcomed in first vegetarian White House

Q: Would you be the first vegetarian president?

A: I don’t know. I should research that, but maybe.

Q: Former President Bush opposed broccoli.

A: Broccoli would be welcomed in my White House, and vegetarians would be welcomed in my White House.

Pat Buchanan: Two Beltway parties for each others’ bidding

The Republican Party has basically caved in and compromised with Clinton, on tax cuts & downsizing government. They’ve become a party of big government. Congress gave Clinton $1/2 billion more than he requested for the Dept. of Education. We have two big government Beltway parties which are globalists & interventionists. It is like professional wrestling. They do battle and they call each other names here in town. But when push comes to shove, [the GOP] whips votes for Clinton to help out China.

Pat Buchanan: Suing FEC to include Reform Party in presidential debates

Q: The Reform Party is in a suit against the Presidential Debate Commission. What are you requesting of the FEC?

A: The Commission is supposed to be non-partisan. It is not. It is bipartisan. It has been set up [to keep] third parties out of the presidential debate. We have three parties recognized by the Congress and the FEC. To have two of them conspiring to keep the third party out of the crucial and decisive event of the elections is basically a conspiracy to keep control of the White House.

Ralph Nader: Expand agenda to voter, worker, consumer, shareholder

Q: How much pressure has been brought to you to drop out of the race?

A: I’ve heard from emissaries from the Democrats, from some members of Congress, and their question is always, why are you doing this? And I’ve given them the answer:

This is a broad political effort to enlist young people, broaden the agenda, and focus relentlessly on expanding the tools of democracy -- for the five roles we play in our country: voter, worker, taxpayer, consumer and shareholder.
