Newsweek: on Abortion

Chris Sununu: Disagrees with states having no exception abortion bans

During an interview on CNN's State of the Union, host Jake Tapper asked the governor: "What's your response when you hear someone like South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem, who said...that her state's law would make no exception for a young girl who got pregnant after being raped?"

"I don't agree with that at all. I just don't," Sununu responded. "Governor Noem and the folks of South Dakota have to reconcile that."

Eric Greitens: Overturn law making St. Louis into "abortion sanctuary city"

The governor of Missouri, Republican Eric Greitens, has called a special legislative session to change a local law that he says makes St. Louis into an "abortion sanctuary city." In a video message shared on Twitter, Greitens declares himself to be "pro-life" and "proud to support life--the lives of mothers, their children and the innocent unborn."

Neil Gorsuch: Let Hobby Lobby skip contraceptives on religious grounds

Gorsuch hasn't written a ruling specifically dealing with Roe v. Wade, but he is known to have strong opinions on religious liberty, a view that appeals to many conservatives. He has sided, for example, with religious employers seeking to limit their employees' rights to contraception coverage in health care insurance, as dictated under the Affordable Care Act. In Hobby Lobby Stores v. Sebelius, in June 2013, the 10th Circuit ordered the federal government to stop enforcement of the federal mandate against Hobby Lobby, the Oklahoma-based Christian chain of retail arts and crafts stores. In his concurrence, Gorsuch highlighted that the contraception mandate substantially burdened the company's religious exercise. The Supreme Court later upheld the 10th Circuit decision in the case.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Keep government away from women's childbearing choices

Abortion remains a top priority for Democratic voters. Joe Biden and Marianne Williamson have positioned themselves as strong advocates for abortion rights, with Williamson's campaign website describing her as "one hundred percent pro-choice."

Biden highlighted his stance on abortion during his campaign announcement, accusing "MAGA Republicans" of trying to dictate "what health care decisions women can make."

Kennedy Jr., however, has not made recent remarks about abortion, nor does his campaign site clarify his position on reproductive rights. When reached by Newsweek, a campaign spokesperson said Kennedy Jr. "believes strongly in the principle of bodily autonomy, whether the issue is abortion or medical mandates."

"He will keep government away from women's childbearing choices. The moral issues are best left to the woman, her family, and her religious community," the spokesperson added.

Royce White: Praised overturning of Roe; accused of paying for abortion

A Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota faced resurfaced allegations of paying women to have an abortion. In 2013, one of the women White was previously linked to, Fatima Jaed, told Bossip, an African American popular culture and entertainment site, that he offered her $20,000 for an abortion, which she did not have done.

Jaed continued by claiming several other women were asked by White to get an abortion. "That's how out of touch with reality he is," she said. "He thinks you can just get rid of a baby like that. He doesn't care. I know he has asked almost every girl he has ever been with to get an abortion as soon as he knocks them up."

In 2022 White made an appearance on Bannon's "War Room" podcast, as he took to X to celebrate the overturning of the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling. "Roe v. Wade overturned. Praise be to the most high!...You can't have human rights or civil rights without sanctity of life. Protect Black babies! Let's take America back," White said.
