Alan Keyes: Withdraws; job done since GOP & V.P. are both pro-life

Talk-radio host Alan Keyes will officially end his long-shot campaign for the Republican presidential nomination next week, but aides said the well-spoken conservative has not yet decided whether to endorse George W. Bush.

“His work is done now that the Republican Party has adopted a pro-life platform and pro-life running mate,” said a Keyes spokesperson. Bush announced Tuesday that Dick Cheney would be his vice presidential running mate.

Doug Ducey: Staunchly anti-abortion

Ducey held a convincing lead of 37 percent in the six-way race after most of the ballots had been counted. His closest rival, ex-mayor Scott Smith, took some 22 percent of the vote.

"Now the real race begins," said the staunchly anti-abortion Ducey, 50, a former chief executive of ice cream company Cold Stone Creamery, whose supporters include Tea Party favorite Texas Senator Ted Cruz and hardline Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Josh Hawley: New abortion restrictions protects women

New abortion regulations took effect on Tuesday that critics argue will make it more difficult for women to access the procedure. "This is about making it as difficult as possible to obtain an abortion," a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood said. Attorney General Josh Hawley praised the law in a statement issued on Monday, saying, "SB5 enacts sensible regulations that protect the health of women in Missouri and we will continue to vigorously defend these."

Pope Francis: Women who had abortions can be forgiven in Holy Year

Pope Francis will give all priests discretion to formally forgive women who have had abortions during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church.

In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication. Usually only designated clergy & missionaries can formally forgive abortions. But from Dec.8 to Nov. 26, during an extraordinary Holy Year or "Jubilee" on the theme of mercy announced by Pope Francis in March, all priests will be able to do so, he said in a letter published by the Vatican.

In the letter, Francis described the "existential & moral ordeal" faced by women who have terminated pregnancies and said he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision". He has shown no intention of retracting the Church's opposition to abortion, but has alarmed conservatives by taking a less forceful tone.

Samuel Alito: Respect for precedent implies not overturning Roe v Wade

In recent conversations with senators, Alito has stressed his respect for precedent -- which some abortion rights supporters have seen as a sign that he might not overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling. Alito has strong support from anti-abortion conservatives in the Senate.

Todd Akin: Resisted stepping aside after "legitimate rape" comment

Republican Todd Akin and incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill debated on Thursday, but did not discuss Akin's "legitimate rape" remark that drew national attention to their US Senate race. Akin's comment in August that women have biological defenses against pregnancies that might be caused by "legitimate rapes," which he later retracted, drew widespread rebukes even from members of his own party. The 6-term congressman resisted requests that he step aside for another candidate to take on McCaskill.
