Bill Lee: Called critical race theory is "un-American"

In the past year, at least eight Republican-controlled states, including Tennessee, have passed laws restricting how the concept of race can be taught. Republican Governor Bill Lee, who signed the measure into law, told reporters that critical race theory is "un-American." The law prohibits public schools from teaching that anyone is "privileged" due to their race. Lessons also cannot make students feel "discomfort, guilt [or] anguish" because of their race or sex.

Dan Quayle: Smaller govt; bigger defense; stronger families

[The bases for Quayle’s campaign are]: Lower taxes, smaller government, a bolstered defense and stronger families. Major issues facing the country are the decline in the values that parents try to teach their children, a middle-class tax squeeze, education, and a rudderless foreign policy.

Harry Browne: Little difference between Dems & Reps; hopes to be spoiler

Polls in Colorado and Illinois show Harry Browne drawing support from 3% of voters, with Bush & Gore in a statistical dead heat. "It would be nice if I got 3% in a state that was decided by 1%," Browne said, relishing the idea of the role of spoiler. He won 485,759 votes in the 1996 presidential vote, less than 1% of the national tally.

A Libertarian Party spokesman said the polls show Browne and the Libertarians are finally breaking through. "It's important from the standpoint of letting people know that when they vote for the Libertarian candidate their vote counts," the spokesman said.

Not that Browne cares who wins. "I didn't vote for 30 years because I did not see any difference between Republicans and Democrats," said Browne, who is doing little to encourage participation in the Nov. 7 presidential election. "I don't blame people who don't vote today," he added.

Janet Yellen: Got permission from ethics lawyers before acting

Before calling the meeting, Yellen sought and received permission from Treasury ethics lawyers to do so and ensure that she was in compliance with her ethics agreement. Reuters reported here on Monday that such an ethics waiver might be necessary because of the over $700,000 in speaking fees Yellen was paid by Citadel LLC, a hedge fund that has been at the center of the GameStop trading saga.

Pope Francis: Politicians attacking gays, Jews, gypsies are like Nazis

Pope Francis said politicians who rage against homosexuals, gypsies and Jews remind him of Hitler. "It is not coincidental that at times there is a resurgence of symbols typical of Nazism," Francis said in an address to participants of an international conference on criminal law.

"And I must confess to you that when I hear a speech (by) someone responsible for order or for a government, I think of speeches by Hitler in 1934, 1936," he said, departing from his prepared address.

Vladimir Putin: Has given the church a major voice in society

Putin, dressed in nothing but a pair of blue swimming trunks, immersed himself in the freezing water of a cross-shaped pool near Moscow, observing an Orthodox Christian ritual to mark the feast of Epiphany. Putin, 68, grew up under Communist rule where open shows of religion were frowned upon. As president, he has become a frequent attender of Russian Orthodox ceremonies, and has given the church a major voice in society.
