The New Republic: on War & Peace

Al Gore: Supported continuing 1998 air strikes in Iraq

President Clinton’s decision to abort air strikes against Iraq was hardly based on the unanimous counsel of his advisers. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Defense Secretary William Cohen opposed backing down. And, according to The Wall Street Journal, so did Vice President Al Gore.

Al Gore: Supported Bush’s 1991 bombing of Iraq

Back in 1991 many of [then Senator] Gore’s aides warned him to forget his shot at the White House if he bucked his party and voted to in favor of President George Bush’s plan to bomb Iraq. [Gore’s chief foreign policy adviser Leon] Fuerth, however, argued that the war was good policy, and Gore, to his subsequent benefit, followed Fuerth’s advice.

Rahm Emanuel: Israel/Palestine framework deal easier than a final deal

Q: What do you think went wrong at the beginning of the administration with the Obama-Netanyahu relationship? How optimistic are you about a peace deal?

EMANUEL: I am uncharacteristically optimistic, just on the optimism side of 50%.

Q: Why now?

EMANUEL: I think it is a framework deal, which is different and easier than a final deal. And I think the parties have enough in common about the framework, which they have known for ten years.

Q: But why is there the will now?

EMANUEL: Hamas is as weak as it's going to be. Abbas is ready to work with Israel. Israel has a security concern involving geography. But geography does not have the same value it did in 1967. And I want to say that there is nothing I just said that major figures in the national security apparatus of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] and Israel haven't said publicly. Nothing! It is not my business. I don't really care. But Israel's national security apparatus has concluded what I have observed.

Tulsi Gabbard: Policy allowing women in combat roles long overdue

Q: Should women in combat be prohibited?

Gabbard: I think that the policy change [allowing women in combat] was long overdue and reflected kind of a catching up to the reality of some of the jobs that women have been doing in combat situations now for some time. Within the last 12 years that our country has been at war, it's been a very unconventional type of combat. It's different from former concepts of "the front lines" and "the rear," and who is doing what, and where the attacks are coming from.

Josh Shapiro: BDS (boycotting Israel) is rooted in antisemitism

As Pennsylvania attorney general, Shapiro championed the state's constitutionally dubious anti-BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) law against Ben & Jerry's after the ice cream maker refused to license its product for sale in Israeli settlements. "BDS is rooted in antisemitism," Shapiro wrote in 2021, as he condemned a company named for its two Jewish American founders. "The stated goal of this amorphous movement is the removal of Jewish citizens from the region and I strongly oppose their efforts."
