Twitter.com election tweets: on Civil Rights

Bob Harlow: Give our LGBT brothers & sisters their rights

Harlow posted on Twitter: "Tell @JudgeBradleyWI that you reject her desire to deny women their rights & her bashing of our LGBT brothers & sisters."

OnTheissues note: Judge Rebecca Bradley had written in 1992 in the Marquette Tribune that AIDS patients had effectively chosen to kill themselves. That and other anti-gay statements were a major issue in Bradley's 2016 judgeship race, which Bradley won.

@senatormcdaniel: "In light of all the political correctness and leftist hysteria, I'm curious about what you think: How should Robert E. Lee be remembered?"

Joe Walsh: It's racist to say "go back to where you came from"

Walsh has a history of inconsistency in his opinions of Trump's rhetoric. At times, he has denounced the president as a racist. This summer when Trump told four Democratic congresswomen, who are people of color and citizens of the U.S., to "go back and help fix" the countries he said they "originally came" from before trying to make legislative changes in the USA, Walsh spoke out.

"To say 'go back to where you came from' is gross. It's offensive, ignorant, anti-American, and racist," Walsh tweeted. "The most racist thing Donald Trump said yesterday? Of Baltimore, he said: 'No human being would want to live there.' So all those black Americans who live in majority black Baltimore aren't human beings? That's really ugly. That's really racist.

But it was not that long ago that Walsh thought Trump's language made him a bully, but not a racist, and that Walsh was still making racist claims about Obama: "Trump treats everyone like shit. Not just black women. He's not a racist. He's a bully."

Nikema Williams: I'm in Congress because Rep Lewis broke barriers

To say I'm living my ancestors' wildest dreams is an understatement. I would not be here today if my friend, Congressman Lewis, had not broken barriers for people who look like me. I am especially thankful for him today, on what would have been his 81st birthday.

Sally Yates: Not fighting racism is ruinous to moral fiber of America

Sally Yates warned that the "moral fiber" of America is in danger from the "unapologetic racism" President Trump has unleashed in his attacks on four minority congresswomen.

In a pair of tweets, the former Justice Department official quoted Edmund Burke and warned that those who did not stand up to Trump over his slams on the four lawmakers would bear responsibility for enabling them.

She tweeted: 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' Edmund Burke. Standing idly by as the moral fiber of our country is shredded by unapologetic racism may seem politically expedient to some, but it is ruinous for our nation. And those who could have stood up but cowered instead bear equal responsibility for the vile devolution of our country's values.

The House voted on mostly party lines Tuesday to condemn as racist the president's tweets aimed at Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Rashida Tlaib (MI.) and Ayanna Pressley (MA).

Stacey Abrams: Reflect on terrible Confederacy in museums, not monuments

Rep. Abrams on Twitter: "The removal of the bas relief [sculptures] of Confederates from Stone Mountain has been a constant debate since the state bought the property in 1958. Paid for by founders of the 2nd KKK, the monument had no purpose other than celebration of racism, terror & division when carved in 1915. We must never celebrate those who defended slavery and tried to destroy the Union. Confederate monuments belong in museums where we can study and reflect on that terrible history, not in places of honor across our state. The managers of Stone Mountain have taken steps to educate with a powerful audio tour to return the listener to the horrors of slavery. But the visible image of Stone Mountain's edifice remains a blight on our state and should be removed. State leg led by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus have pushed for action for decades. I supported action then & I renew calls now."

Tammy Duckworth: Calls for Justice Dept investigation into gay hate crime

I joined @senBooker and @RepPressley in calling for @TheJusticeDept to conduct an independent investigation into the brutal murder of an unarmed #Ahmaud Arbery and whether county officials violated his civil rights by failing to even arrest let alone prosecute his killers.

Allen Waters: Only blacks can solve black problems; starts with God, Moses

Black Americans are still in the Communist tool kit and black leaders to help save us from being exploited are hard to find because they are on the 'payroll.' We are not victims. Only blacks can solve black problems, and that starts with God and Moses.
