John Bolton: Declined impeachment testimony due to "personal involvement"

Bolton's book "The Room Where It Happened" is expected to detail other pressure campaigns on foreign governments beyond China and Ukraine, where the president's efforts to pressure the East European government to publicly investigate Joe Biden led to Trump's impeachment last year. 'I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my White House tenure that wasn't driven by reelection calculations,' Bolton writes in the book.

Bolton, national security adviser from April 2018 until Sept. 2019, was a central figure in the Senate impeachment trial of Trump following the House's decision to forward two charges to the Senate for consideration: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After Bolton didn't appear voluntarily before a House impeachment hearing in November, his lawyer told the investigating committees that his client was 'personally involved' in meetings relevant to the inquiry into whether Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine for political reasons.

Donald Trump: More due process was afforded at Salem Witch Trials

In a six-page invective to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Donald Trump contended he has been more wronged in the impeachment proceedings than even the 17th-century women who were hanged based on dreams, visions and confessions elicited by torture. "More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials," the president wrote.

But legal experts say this criticism is based on a misinterpretation of what the Constitution says about impeachment and how much protection it gives the president. The answer: Not much. The Fifth Amendment says no one can be deprived of "life, liberty or property" without due process of law. A president facing an impeachment trial is not at risk of losing life, liberty or property.

Mitch McConnell: Not an impartial juror about impeachment, at all

Senators in an impeachment trial are required to take an oath promising to be impartial. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he is "not impartial about this at all." He has guaranteed Trump's acquittal, telling Fox News host Sean Hannity there's "zero chance" the president will be removed from office. In a criminal trial, lawyers probably would keep someone off the jury if he declared as little impartiality as McConnell.

Tulsi Gabbard: Voted "present" because of lack of bipartisan support

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard angered some of her fellow Democrats by voting "present" on both articles of impeachment against Trump, but she earned praise from the man who is the target of those charges. "I give her a lot of respect. Because she knew it was wrong. She took a pass," Trump said. Gabbard, however, did not say that she declined to vote one way or the other on the

Donald Trump: Open-border socialism brings suffering, misery and decay

The truth is that the centrist Democratic Party is dead. The new Democrats are radical socialists who want to model America's economy after Venezuela.

Government-run health care is just the beginning. Democrats are also pushing massive government control of education, private-sector businesses and other major sectors of the US economy.

Every single citizen will be harmed by such a radical shift in American culture and life. Virtually everywhere it has been tried, socialism has brought suffering, misery and decay.

Indeed, the Democrats' commitment to government-run health care is all the more menacing when paired with some Democrats' absolute commitment to end enforcement of our immigration laws. That means millions more would cross our borders illegally and take advantage of health care paid for by American taxpayers.

Today's Democratic Party is for open-borders socialism. This radical agenda would destroy American prosperity. Under its vision, costs will spiral out of control.

Mike Pence: When criticized about Jesus, I breath a prayer of praise

Vice President Mike Pence turned to the Bible when asked recently what he makes of a new critical biography that calls him as a "Christian supremacist." "The Bible says count it all joy when you endure trials of many kinds," Pence told the Christian Broadcasting Network. "Any time I'm criticized for my belief in Jesus Christ, I just breath a prayer of praise."

In "The Shadow President: The Truth About Mike Pence," that came out this week, authors Michael D'Antonio and Peter Eisner cast Pence's background--congressman, Indiana governor, Trump VP--in a harsh light, arguing that "the most successful Christian supremacist in American history" is already functioning as a "kind of replacement president" and is preparing to "fashion a nation more pleasing to his god and corporate sponsors."

Pence has long described himself as a "Christian, a conservative and a Republican--in that order."

Karen Testerman: BSA changing sexual orientation policy leads to atheism

Additionally, boys who join the Boy Scouts of America pledge their "duty to God and my country." Asking the Boy Scouts of America to change its policy on sexual orientation will eventually lead to a challenge to its belief in God. Some atheist leaders have already said they will pursue this.

Ron Paul: Breaks one-day fundraising record: $6M at “Boston Tea Party”

Ron Paul raised an astounding $6 million & change Sunday. The campaign announced they had eclipsed the $5.7 million that John Kerry raised the day after he locked up the 2004 Democratic nomination--arguably the largest single-day fundraising haul in US political history.

Paul, whose campaign has been embraced by a zealous community of online supporters, raised $4.2 million on Nov. 5, [corresponding with Guy Fawkes Day]. The current fundraising effort was timed for the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, a day meant to resonate with the Libertarian sensibilities of his supporters.

The man who engineered it-- Trevor Lyman, a 37-year-old music promoter--has no official ties to the campaign and had no political experience before he engineered the innovative model for Nov. 5. He set up a website that solicited pledges for contributions to be made directly to the Paul campaign on that day--a technique that became known as a “money bomb,” which he used again to such great effect Sunday.

Bob Smith: Withdraws from FL Senate race, citing lack of money

Former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith on Thursday ended his campaign for a Senate seat in his new home of Florida, citing a poor start to fund-raising. The Republican raised only $66,000 in a crowded campaign that features five GOP candidates who have topped the $1 million mark. “In spite of our best effort, we just didn’t raise enough money to make the campaign viable,” Smith said. Smith was only receiving about 1% support in recent polls.

Smith has long been considered a maverick. He left the Republican party and ran for president in 1999, but rejoined the party a few months later, saying he had made a mistake. The two-term senator was defeated in the 2002 Republican primary by John Sununu, who went on to win the election. He took a job last year selling high-end waterfront real estate in Florida. Instead of seeking office again, Smith said he accepted an appointment to be president of the Everglades Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to restoring the wetlands area.

Gerald Ford: Profile in Courage Award for pardon of Nixon

Former president Gerald Ford was named this year’s winner of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation’s Profile in Courage Award for pardoning former president Richard Nixon in 1974. Many believe the pardon cost Ford re-election in 1976 and prevented a full airing of a scandal that involved bribery and political spying. But the givers of the award say the move spared the nation a protracted legal battle. “This had to be considered a great act of political courage because he knew what the public’s attitude was,” said the chair of the award committee.

Nixon resigned Aug. 8, 1974, rather than be impeached on charges of obstructing justice. Ford pardoned him a month later for any crimes he might have committed while in office.
