U.S. News and World Report: on Principles & Values

Bill Bradley: Emphasizes positions on left

Not all of Bradley’s positions are to the left, but he has emphasized those that are. He has proposed a far-reaching new health insurance plan, favors allowing open gays in the military, and, in his search for racial reconciliation, appeared at a meeting convened by the racial demagogue Al Sharpton. Bradley seems to be starting off with common premises and trying to advance a consensus. But Bradley’s consensus may be too far left for voters.

Bill Lee: Faith would influence my decisions as governor

Lee said his faith would influence his decisions as governor if elected, although he is not running to focus on social issues. "No one will outwork me and I will run the most aggressive campaign in Tennessee history," he said. "We may not have as much pocket change as everyone else, but we'll burn more shoe leather than anybody."

George W. Bush: Oil-town upbringing bred ‘compassionate conservatism'

Bush's campaign describes Midland [Texas, where Bush was raised,] as the incubator of Bush's egalitarianism, his belief in personal responsibility, and his philosophy of ‘compassionate conservatism.' Bush says, "the slogan of Midland was, ‘The Sky's the Limit.' That meant for everybody, not just a few." The experience, he says, deepened his belief in the importance of optimism and the goals of "limited government, open markets, free and fair trade, and tax policy that encourages productivity."

Jennifer Granholm: Antidote to negativity and pain: service to others

There is a sure-fire antidote for the negativity and pain that besets our democracy, an antidote that is the purest act of all: service to others. Even the hardest heart softens when a tutored child overcomes the odds to excel. Even the most virulent antigovernment activist feels compassion in delivering meals to disabled and home-bound seniors. The acts of kindness occurring each day all over America can begin to heal our pain, soothe our rage, and remind us that we are one human family.

Ralph Nader: Goal is 5% of vote, to qualify Greens as a recognized party

Nader knows he's not moving into the White House, but he has a concrete goal: 5 percent of the vote so the Green Party will become a recognized third party and can reap millions in federal campaign matching funds in 2004. He defines victory as "getting tens of thousands of people into political activity and hundreds of candidates running. We become the third political party in America, with the fourth way behind." Nader says his chief aim is a "shift of power," which would help him achieve his agenda: universal health insurance, public financing of campaigns, and the shifting of tax dollars from "corporate welfare and a bloated military budget" to services for people.
