Carly Fiorina: I know the leaders of the Mideast; Obama & Hillary do not

Having never held political office before, Fiorina is obviously a longshot for the nomination. Many have speculated that she's truly running for vice president. Whatever the case, she has to prove that she's a credible, serious, informed leader, and not one of the self-promoters who've plagued GOP primaries recently.

Her response: Fiorina gave a strong speech that was enthusiastically received by the crowd. She focused on burnishing her foreign credentials, arguing that "I know Bibi Netanyahu," and "I know King Abdullah of Jordan," as a way to critique the Obama Administration's policies in the Middle East. She also repeatedly attacked Hillary Clinton, telling her to "please, name an accomplishment," and arguing that traveling the world doesn't count as one. Essentially, Fiorina was arguing that a long political resume doesn't necessarily mean a candidate is qualified--and suggesting that her short one shouldn't disqualify her.

Donald Trump: Treat foes of US worse than they could ever imagine

We declined to certify the terrible one-sided Iran nuclear deal. It was a horrible deal. Whoever heard you give $150 billion to a nation that has no respect for you whatsoever? They're saying death to America. If somebody said death to America, while I'm signing an agreement, I say what's going on, folks? I'm not signing. People that treat us well, we treat them well. People that treat us badly, we treat them much worse than they could ever imagine. That's the way it has to be.

Lincoln Chafee: After Iraq war, we have to repair American credibility

We have to repair American credibility after we told the world that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, which he didn't. Any time someone is running to be our leader, and a world leader, which the American president is, credibility is an issue out there with the world. And we have repair work to be done. I think we need someone that has the best in ethical standards as our next president.

Veronica Escobar: Puerto Rico still rebuilding after 2017 Hurricane Maria

Escobar [noted how] the president's rhetoric has targeted Latinos and immigrants more broadly. "In America, our diversity makes us stronger--it is what uplifts all voices and makes us an inclusive, dynamic country," she said in Spanish. "Yet, the president clearly does not share this belief." She acknowledged Puerto Ricans' struggle to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017. And she pointed out how Trump's immigration policies have harmed immigrants living in the US, including so-called DREAMers, who may lose their legal status if the president's efforts to dismantle Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals prevails; immigrant families who were separated on the border; migrant children who have died in immigration custody; and migrants who face dangerous conditions waiting in Mexico for their chance to seek asylum in the US. "These are policies none of us ever imagined would happen in America in our lifetime," she said.
