Ben Carson: Pinnacle nations before us contributed to their own demise

It is very important for the American people to know that we are the pinnacle nation in the world, and while there have been a number of pinnacle nations before us, a lot of them contributed to their own demise in a similar fashion that we are now. Whether it be 16th-century Spain or Ancient Rome--these powers spent themselves into trouble. Why would we think we could do the same thing and not be adversely affected?

Historians will write about this critical turning point for our nation, and how we responded to the dynamic forces changing our world. We can no longer afford the continuing dysfunction of opposing partisan rancor or the empty rhetoric of the political class. If America is to survive the challenges of the modern world, we need to heal, we need to inspire, and we need to revive an exceptional spirit that built America. Respect for one another has become the exception, not the norm.

Harry Browne: Military involvement often fails even when US “wins”.

North Korea remains an apparent threat almost 50 years after Truman’s involving America there. North Vietnam today controls all of Vietnam- despite the death and destruction unleashed by Johnson & Nixon. And in spite of America’s great “victory” in Iraq, Saddam remains on the throne. So what did all those interventions achieve? And what will the destruction of Yugoslavia achieve? Peace is always promised, but never arrives, no matter how much killing is justified by the search for peace.

Harry Browne: Illegal war actions set precedents for more future wars

NATO has violated its own charter by waging war when none of its member nations has been attacked. How will this war set a precedent for future wars? When Truman illegally committed American troops to fight the Korean War, that made it easier for Johnson to illegally commit troops to Vietnam -- which made it easier yet for Nixon to illegally bomb Cambodia. These precedents removed all possible restraints on Clinton. How easy it will be now for the next president to bomb presumed drug fields in Mexico?

Alan Keyes: Call to account those responsible for Chinese espionage

I cannot understand how any American can be complacent about [Chinese espionage detailed in the Cox Report]. We will be struggling to deal with the consequences of this devastating blow for the next 20 and 30 years. And yet many Americans are still just sitting and watching. We should have a deep sense of outrage, and our political leaders should call to account those who have been on watch. God help us if we accept a week or two of public hand-wringing over the Cox Report as an adequate response.
