Judd Gregg in NH Senate Debate

On Drugs: Marijuana should not be legalized for medical use

Gregg said marijuana should not be legalized for medical use, but physicians should be able to argue that some cases were exceptional, such as patients suffering from terminal cancer. “We should keep the law the way it is,” he said.

On Corporations: Risk-takers like Wal-Mart create jobs

Gregg said while Wal-Mart “has a huge effect” on local businesses, market forces should remain a dominant economic factor. He added that the chain would not be successful if local consumers didn’t prefer its prices and products. “We should always remain a market-oriented economy that rewards risk-takers,” he said, “because the risk-takers create jobs.”

On Education: No Child Left Behind requires states to set standards

GREGG: We now know if kids are taught what they should be taught by looking at the school’s record.

HADDOCK: Haddock said more federal money is needed for public schools. “You go in some schools and they are like a country club and others are a shame to go into,” she said.

On Tax Reform: Made the right decision to cut taxes for the wealthy

HADDOCK: You voted for tax cuts for the wealthiest American at a time of war? How can you justify that when we’re not secure and we have the largest budget deficit in history?

GREGG: I believe very strongly we made the right decision to cut taxes when we did. We were coming out of the biggest bubble in the ‘90s we have seen and then we had 9/11.

On War & Peace: No timetable for the troops to come home

GREGG: Asked when the troops would come home, Gregg said when Iraq can function as a democracy and can protect itself. “Nobody really knows the timetable, but obviously we are working in the right direction,” Gregg said.

HADDOCK: Haddock said, “Mr. Gregg is in favor of this mistaken and unnecessary war and I oppose it.” But she said she supports the $87 billion that Bush asked Congress to approve to support the troops.
