George LeMieux in The Party's Over, by Charlie Crist

On Immigration: No path to citizenship until borders fully secured

I appointed my former campaign chairman and chief of staff, George LeMieux, to fill out the balance of Mel's Senate term. I had confidence in George. A few people had advised me not to pick him. They said, "It'll look like you're sending your crony to Washington."

In fact, when George got to Washington, he was anything but my crony. He was there for 5 minutes and was already doing things I didn't necessarily like. He certainly didn't carry Mel's torch on immigration reform. He promptly aligned himself with the party's build-high-fences-and-evict-the-immigrants wing. Until the borders were fully secured, he said, there could be no path to citizenship for the 10 to 12 million undocumented men, women, and children who were already here, including an estimated 1 million in Florida. So much for cronyism.
