Nathan Deal in Planned Bullyhood, by Karen Handel

On Government Reform: Resigned Congress after being named most corrupt politician

Nathan Deal had been named one of the most corrupt politicians in Washington. The nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) found Deal had taken "active steps" to protect a state contract that netted his company nearly $300,000 a year, while also exceeding the limits set on outside income for members of Congress. The report recommended further investigation, and the matter was referred to the congressional ethics committee. On March 21 at 11:45 pm, Deal resigned--just one day before the ethics committee's deadline to act. The resignation allowed him to campaign full-time for governor and escape the jurisdiction of the congressional committee.

Later, still more alleged serious ethical lapses would come to light.

Deal failed to report millions of dollars in business loans on his federal financial disclosures and his personal financial disclosures filed to run for governor.
