2019 State of the Union address: on Gun Control

Nancy Pelosi: Gun violence epidemic is the real threat to Americans

Speaker Nancy Pelosi panned President Trump's State of the Union address, noting that for all his warnings about threats against the United States, he did not discuss "the gun violence epidemic."

"Sadly, while talking about perceived threats to the safety of the American people, he completely ignored the gun violence epidemic that is claiming lives across the country," she said.

The president did not broadly discuss recent mass shootings during his roughly 80-minute speech. He did reference last October's shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh that left 11 people dead, though he spoke about the tragedy in the context of confronting anti-Semitism.

Xavier Becerra: Protect our families from the violent use of firearms

Your vote in November changed the votes in Congress. And that has changed the politics of our nation. Now that you see your power, are you ready to open new doors?

Don't you think that it is already the time that we in our government build schools, not walls? Then, get those hands ready to vote in the next election! Imagine if we had the power to decide this nation's political agenda.

This was not the agenda presented by the President. But these are the solutions that open the doors of opportunity.
