2022 State of the Union address: on War & Peace

Joe Biden: Military & humanitarian assistance, but no troops to Ukraine

Along with 27 members of the European Union, we are inflicting pain on Russia and supporting the people of Ukraine. Putin is now isolated from the world more than ever.

Together with our allies--we are right now enforcing powerful economic sanctions. The U.S. Department of Justice is assembling a dedicated task force to go after the crimes of Russian oligarchs.

Together with our allies we are providing support to the Ukrainians in their fight for freedom. Military assistance. Economic assistance. Humanitarian assistance. We are giving more than $1 Billion in direct assistance to Ukraine.

Let me be clear, our forces are not engaged and will not engage in conflict with Russian forces in Ukraine. As I have made crystal clear the United States and our Allies will defend every inch of territory of NATO countries with the full force of our collective power.

Joe Biden: Make dictators pay a price; American resolve matters

Russia's Vladimir Putin badly miscalculated.

He thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would roll over. Instead he met a wall of strength he never imagined. He met the Ukrainian people. From President Zelenskyy to every Ukrainian, their fearlessness, their courage, their determination, inspires the world. Groups of citizens blocking tanks with their bodies. Everyone from students to retirees teachers turned soldiers defending their homeland.

Let each of us here tonight in this Chamber send an unmistakable signal to Ukraine and to the world. Throughout our history we've learned this lesson when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression they cause more chaos. They keep moving. And the costs and the threats to America and the world keep rising.

That's why the NATO Alliance was created to secure peace and stability in Europe after World War 2. It matters. American diplomacy matters. American resolve matters.

Kim Reynolds: US Afghan withdrawal cost US lives and allies

Even before taking the oath of office, the President told us that he wanted to 'make America respected around the world again and to unite us here at home.' He's failed on both fronts.

The disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal did more than cost American lives; it betrayed our allies and emboldened our enemies.

North Korea is testing missiles again at an alarming rate, the Speaker of the House recently warned our Olympic athletes not to speak out against China, and now Russia has launched an unprovoked full-scale military invasion of Ukraine-an attack on democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. Now all Americans must stand united in solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine as they courageously defend their country against Putin's tyranny. As they fight for their freedom.

Lauren Boebert: Biden's Afghan withdrawal caused US flag-draped coffins

President Biden spoke about Afghanistan and Iraq veterans and his late son, Beau Biden, during his State of the Union address. Biden was speaking about the effects of "burn pits" that "incinerated wastes of war--medical and hazard material, jet fuel, and more," saying some veterans battle "a cancer that would put them in a flag-draped coffin. I know."

After that remark, Boebert shouted, "You put them in, 13 of them," referencing 13 service members who died last year in a bomb attack in Kabul.

Democrats booed Boebert after the outburst.

Biden continued without acknowledging Boebert's comment, mentioning his son: "I don't know for sure if the burn pit that he lived near in Iraq, and earlier than that, in Kosovo, was the cause of his brain cancer, or the disease of so many of our troops, but I am committed to finding out everything we can," he said.

Boebert tweeted about the moment after the speech, claiming she "couldn't stay silent" when she heard Biden refer to "flag-draped coffins."

Libertarian Party: Commit to peace instead of committing support to Ukraine

President Biden spent a significant amount of time speaking about Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine and what the US response has been thus far. He reiterated that the US will not send troops to fight a war with Russia in Ukraine, but is pulling American men and women away from their homes for deployment to NATO countries in Europe. While the Libertarian Party, too, opposes involving American troops in the war in Ukraine, we recognize that a long history of rushing into conflicts around the globe leaves both old parties with damaged track records as peacemakers. So, the Libertarian Party will be plain and clear. Under no circumstances should we enter into another war that would cost thousands of American lives and significantly increase the already $30 trillion national debt. We call on Americans from across the political spectrum to join us in holding this administration accountable for demonstrating a commitment to peace.
