2026 State of the Union address: on Government Reform

Donald Trump: Stop Insider Trading Act: Congress plunders stock market

Let's ensure that members of Congress cannot corruptly profit from using insider information. They [the Democrats] stood up for that. I can't believe it! I'm very impressed. Did [former Democratic Speaker] Nancy Pelosi stand up? Doubt it!

When it comes to the corruption--really, it's plundering America. This is the kind of corruption that shreds the fabric of a nation, and we are working on it like you wouldn't believe. So, tonight, although started four months ago, I am officially announcing the war on fraud to be led by our great Vice President, JD Vance. He'll get it done and, if we're able to find enough of that fraud, we will actually have a balanced budget overnight. It'll go very quickly. That's the kind of money you're talking about. We'll balance our budget.

JD Vance: Will lead the War on Fraud: stop insider trading by Congress

Donald Trump: Cheating is rampant in our elections

I'm asking you to approve the Save America Act to stop illegal aliens and others who are unpermitted persons from voting in our sacred American elections. That cheating is rampant in our elections. It's rampant. It's very simple, all voters must show voter ID. All voters must show proof of citizenship in order to vote. And no more crooked mail-in ballots except for illness, disability, military or travel, none.

Abigail Spanberger: President Trump enriches himself, his family, & his friends

In his speech tonight, the President did what he always does: he lied, he scapegoated, and he distracted. He also offered no real solutions to our nation's pressing challenges--so many of which he is actively making worse. He tries to enrage us, to divide us, to pit us against one another. Neighbor against neighbor. And sometimes, he succeeds.

And so you have to ask: Who benefits from his rhetoric, his policies, his actions, and the short list of laws he's pushed through this Republican Congress? Somebody must be benefitting. He's enriching himself, his family, his friends.

The scale of the corruption is unprecedented. There's the cover-up of the Epstein files. The crypto scams. Cozying up to foreign princes for airplanes and billionaires for ballrooms. Putting his name and face on buildings all over our nation's capital.

This is not what our founders envisioned. So, I'll ask again: Is the President working for you? We all know the answer is no.

Donald Trump: FactCheck: illegal for noncitizens to vote; they never have

TRUMP: "I am asking you to approve the SAVE AMERICA Act to stop illegal aliens and others who are unpermitted persons from voting in our sacred American elections. The cheating is rampant in our elections."

FACT-CHECK: Trump has been claiming that noncitizens are voting en masse in American elections for more than a decade. But it's illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal races, and they have never been found to vote in anything but microscopic numbers. In the rare cases they do vote, research has found it's often due to misunderstandings about the rules, as opposed to an attempt to influence election results, as Trump often claims.

Still, since Trump took office for his second term, his government has put more resources than ever before toward trying to find these voters. They've found very little.

Trump correctly noted that not every state requires voters to show photo ID at the time they cast a ballot. But federal law already requires ID verification for all voters at registration.

Donald Trump: OpEd: "They want to cheat" is authoritarian delegitimization

[OpEd by Zack Beauchamp]: To understand the core purpose of Trump's State of the Union address--arguably, the core purpose of his presidency--you need only to hear one line. During a discussion of the SAVE Act, a bill designed to combat the fictitious scourge of noncitizen voting, Trump claimed that Democrats only opposed the bill because "they want to cheat." And then he took it much further: "Their policy is so bad that the only way they can get elected is to cheat. We have to stop it."

Think about that for a second. The president is claiming that the opposition party is not only wrong on policy but fundamentally illegitimate, so much so that if they win an election it must be because they cheated. Taken literally, that is the president announcing that the policy of his administration is preventing the opposition from winning any future election. We're all so used to wading through Trump's sea of hyperbole that it's easy to push past a bald-faced declaration of authoritarian intent.

Libertarian Party: Dismantle the unchecked authority of the presidency

Trump boasts about signing nearly 100 executive orders in 43 days and taking over 400 executive actions, a record he proudly compares to the likes of George Washington. But libertarians don't measure success by the number of decrees issued from the Oval Office. This is just another example of executive overreach, where laws are no longer written by Congress but dictated by a single individual.

Every administration expands its power, setting a dangerous precedent for the next. The solution is not finding the "right" president but dismantling the unchecked authority of the office itself. A government that can impose, restrict, and direct the economy at will is not a free government, it is a centralized command structure, no different in nature from the regimes we claim to oppose abroad.
