Past and present Senate candidates from Georgia: on Gun Control

Jim Barksdale: Stop suspected terrorists from being able to buy guns

Jim Barksdale issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate failed to pass any firearm legislation, even in the wake the deadliest shooting in U.S. history in Orlando at a gay nightclub on June 12th:

"When partisans on both sides of the aisle cannot come together and pass legislation to stop suspected terrorists from being able to buy guns to kill Americans, we can safely say that Washington is broken. Common sense has left the Capitol."

Amanda Swafford: Sacrificing liberty for safety has never worked

Sacrificing liberty for safety and security has never worked in our history. Our right to defend ourselves from random acts of violence, some uncontrolled mental illness, and crimes against our property is guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution. Allowing adult gun owners to possess and carry firearms in the largest variety of circumstances possible is the strongest deterrent available to protecting our open and free society.

Paul Broun: FactCheck: Guns cause more deaths than bats & hammers

State Sen. Bill Jackson said, "There's more murders with hammers last year than shotguns and pistols and AK-47s." Two days later, US Rep. Paul Broun said: "There are more people killed with baseball bats and hammers than are killed with guns." Is it true

In January, some pro-gun rights Facebook posts began to circulate: "According to the FBI, in 2011, 1,694 were murdered with knives, 726 with hands or feet, 496 with clubs or hammers, 323 with rifles of any type," it read. PolitiFact reviewed 2011 FBI data on the types of weapons used to commit murders; the Facebook numbers nearly matched. So, using selective data, Sen. Jackson's claim is true: more people were killed with hammers than specific types of guns.

Broun's statement is not as specific as Jackson's. FBI data shows that 6,220 Americans were murdered by handguns in 2011. That's more than 12 times the number of people killed with clubs or hammers. Broun's general use of "guns" by its nature includes handguns. That makes his statement way off
