Bob Young in Past and present Senate candidates from Michigan

On Corporations: Regulatory overreach hurts small businesses

Q: On business: what do you want to change?

A: "[On my tour of Michigan businesses], all of those businesses complained about regulatory overreach. The federal government in the last five years has spun out more business crushing regulation than is imaginable. And what people don't understand is that 70% of people employed in our country isn't employed by the GM's or Ford's of our country, it's by small businesses."

On Health Care: ObamaCare should be repealed to increase competition

Q: What is your health care policy?

A: My view is you go back to the marketplace. For example why do we prevent competition of insurers across state lines. That's absurd. I want as much competition because we know one thing: When you have competition you have downward price pressure.

On Immigration: Penalize the insanity of sanctuary cities

Q: What's your immigration policy?

A: I think a nation has the absolute right to know who's in the country and whether their lawfully or not. That's just a given. I don't really understand a contrary view that the nation does not have the right to enforce its integrity by identifying excluding if they choose, people that come into the country.

Q: What's your opinion on sanctuary cities?

A: There's a bill in the house now to penalize cities in Michigan who take that position and I think that's the absolute right response to that insanity.

A: What about a pathway to citizenship?

Q: My view is that any solution now to immigration must exclude the possibility of rewarding those who came into the country illegally with a pathway to citizenship. Whatever we do with that population we cannot by virtue of violating our laws allow them to become citizens.

On Immigration: We have the right to kick out people we don't want here

Q: What's your opinion on immigration?

A: We have the right to know who's in our country, I mean I can't even understand the contrary argument. We have a right to know who's in our country, we have a right to kick people out that we don't want here. I absolutely agree with the president that we have to have a sane border policy.

On Tax Reform: Taxes need to be made simpler and flatter

Q: On taxes, what do you want to change?

A: We need to do something about taxes. I just did a tour of northern Michigan businesses. I was talking to a dairy farmer up there & I said, "I went to Harvard law school, I've been on the supreme court for 18 years and I don't think I can do my taxes I have a professional do it." And he said "My tax return last year was 94 pages." This is a dairy farmer. We need a flat tax, we need something that you don't have to be a tax attorney to do, and it's fair."

On Welfare & Poverty: We can't continue with an entitlement mentality

Q: What do you want to change?

A: The entitlement mentality is something I'm going to try and arrest when I get to Washington. The democrats like Debbie Stabenow are bribing our citizens by using your taxpayer dollars to cause you to accept handouts.

On Corporations: Regulation hurts liberty AND hurts communities

"Liberals like Debbie Stabenow have done everything imaginable to make us weak and the people dependent on government," said Young, who graduated from Harvard and Harvard Law. "I know, I went to school with the people that trained Obama. You only have to look at Detroit and Flint to see what 50 years of liberal policy has done to those once proud, self-reliant communities."

"Our founders created a limited federal government because they understood that unchecked government deprived the people of their liberty," Young said. "Ordinary people understand that our federal government is bloated and out of control. It broke our healthcare system. It lets our veterans die and it spends our money recklessly and attempts to regulate our every, acting decision. Debbie is the chief offender of this and its chief cheerleader."

On Corporations: I believe in limited government (but not no-government)

"I'm not a no-government person, but I'm a limited government person. I want a federal government that operates within its Constitutional rights and we need leaders like (Rep. John Moolenaar) that are committed to our Constitution and not only recognize that these are government failures, but are willing to fight for change," said Young, who was the longest serving chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.

On Education: Parents should decide to which school they send their kids

Desiring an education of children "for the realities of this century," Young would allow parents, no matter their economic level, the opportunity to send their children to the school they think best. "People like Debbie Stabenow support public school monopolies and many urban areas have turned schools, not only into bankrupt educational enterprises, but crime-ridden killing zones," Young said.

On Health Care: The federal government broke our health care system

"Our founders created a limited federal government because they understood that unchecked government deprived the people of their liberty," Young said. "Ordinary people understand that our federal government is bloated and out of control. It broke our health care system. It lets our veterans die and it spends our money recklessly and attempts to regulate our every, acting decision. Debbie is the chief offender of this and its chief cheerleader."
