Randy Hekman in Past and present Senate candidates from Michigan

On Welfare & Poverty: Transform to nonprofit/charity model to provide assistance

During the debate, Kaine pitched himself as a moderate political leader, mentioning frequently that he cut state spending by $5 billion during his time as governor, while simultaneously making investments in infrastructure and human development. Allen criticized Kaine for accepting the role of chairman of the Democratic National Committee, saying he should have spent his final year as governor on state priorities, "not the national partisan role of advocating for President Obama's policies."

On Abortion: Life begins at conception

On Immigration: Secure the borders but encourage legal immigration

Immigration and the right to vote were heavily discussed as well, including states requiring photo identification to vote. Hekman said immigration is important to the U.S. and legal immigration should be encouraged. "We love people, but we want people to come legally," he said. "We've got to make sure to secure the borders. We want to encourage legal immigration. Those who have the guts to come to this country are the ones who generate jobs."
