On Jobs: More national security; labor unions and Dems block it

Former senators Gary Hart and Warren Rudman, in an addendum to their report entitled "America Still Unprepared, America Still in Danger", expressed their frustration that the administration had not yet adopted the sweeping measures necessary to protect the country from terrorism. They accused Washington of taking "symbolic" action while allowing meaningful legislation--such as creation of an effective Department of Homeland Security--to languish in an atmosphere of political bickering. Rudman said, "It's time for action, and if you don't take it, there will be hell to pay."

The political rancor intensified. Senator Phil Gramm, Republican of Texas, said, "It's not that the Democrat leadership loves national security less, it's that they love their political security more. And they are so tied to these public employee labor unions that they're not willing to cross them on issues that have to do with the life and safety of the American people."
