Herman Cain: Undeniable connection between Iraq and War on Terror

Pres. Bush's campaign was clearly able to frame the election as a referendum on his leadership in winning the war on terrorism. What is perhaps most telling about the data in the table below is that, when given the opportunity, voters viewed the war on terrorism and US military action against terrorists in Iraq as two separate issues. Voters were clearly more supportive of Pres. Bush's overall handling of the war on terrorism than on the status of the war in Iraq.

2004 Voters' Most
Important Issue% of votersVoted for BushVoted for Kerry
Iraq15%26%73%
Terrorism19%86%14%
The disconnect in the voters' minds between the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq demonstrate the the Bush administration and Republican congressional leaders have done a poor job in communicating to the electorate the undeniable connections between these issues.

Tom Daschle: 2003: Bush failed at diplomacy; 2004: satisfied with Iraq

Daschle's contradictory behavior is particularly noteworthy on the first anniversary of the liberation of Iraq. On the eve of military action beginning in Iraq, Daschle attacked Bush:"I'm saddened that this president failed so miserably at diplomacy that we're now forced to war. Saddened that we have to give up one life because this president couldn't create the kind of diplomatic effort that was so critical for our country" (Remarks to AFSCME conference, 17 March 2003).

Slightly less than a year later he suddenly reversed himself during a speech in South Dakota:"Daschle praised the Bush administration's war and nation building work in Iraq and said he has no serious concerns about the lack of WMD. Daschle is satisfied with the way things are going in Iraq. He said he is not upset about the debate over pre-war intelligence on weapons of mass destruction, an issue that has dogged Bush as Democratic presidential contenders have slogged through the primary season" (Rapid City Journal, 20 Feb. 2004).
