Trump campaign vs. Trump administration: on Families & Children

Betsy DeVos: OpEd: Stricter rules for sexual harassment mean some ignored

Under Obama, schools could be found in violation of their Title IX obligations for not responding to sexual harassment, interpreted as including all forms of sexual violence, if they knew or reasonably should have known about it.

[Under newly-proposed guidelines], DeVos would narrow incidents involving students that require school response to sexual assault or sexual harassment "so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive" it denies access to education. Schools would only be found in violation if they don't respond to formal reports or multiple complaints about the same person made to an official with authority to respond.

Catherine Lhamon, who helped develop Obama's Department of Education guidance, said she's concerned that DeVos's changes would allow schools to ignore some reports of sexual misconduct. "This administration now tips the favor to accused students," Lhamon said. "We could see a return to the bad old days. This draft offers schools permission to turn away."

Mick Mulvaney: $15,000 in unpaid nanny taxes from triplets in 2000

On $15,000 in unpaid nanny taxes. In reference to the unpaid nanny taxes Mulvaney said, "In 2000, we had triplets. When they came home, we hired someone to help my wife take care of the children. In our minds, she was a babysitter. She did not live with us. She did not spend the night there. She did not cook. She did not clean. She did not educate the children, she helped my wife with the kids." He said he took action to repay those taxes when he discovered the error during the transition.

Sam Clovis: Same-sex marriage could lead to legalizing pedophilia

Sam Clovis has argued that same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of pedophilia. At a campaign stop during his failed campaign for the Republican Senate nomination, Clovis said the science was still out but "as far as we know" being LGBT is protections for a choice in behavior as opposed to a primary characteristic."

Continues Clovis, "Follow the logic, if you engage in a particular behavior, what also becomes protected? Are we going to protect pedophilia? Are we going to protect polyamorous marriage?"

When a questioner said some might call Clovis' words extreme, Clovis responded, "I don't think it's extreme. I think it's a logical extension of thought. And if you cannot follow the logic then you're denying your in denial."

Scott Pruitt: Double headline - Already Done

Scott Pruitt lamented that "minority religions" were pushing Christianity out of "the public square" and advocated amending the Constitution to ban abortion, prohibit same-sex marriage and protect the Pledge of Allegiance and the Ten Commandments, according to a newly unearthed series of Oklahoma talk radio shows from 2005.

Throughout the programs, Pruitt suggested that states might need to call a constitutional convention to propose amendments that would allow expression of religion in government, declare abortion illegal and bar same-sex marriage.

Pruitt acknowledged some trepidation about holding a constitutional convention, which could make wholesale changes to the nation's founding charter.

"It scares me to a large degree to go into something like a constitutional convention, 'cause that means that we're going to have to really be educated, and informed, and debate," he said. "But you know what? Maybe it's time."
