Trump campaign vs. Trump administration: on Government Reform

Donald Trump: Many things can go wrong when early voting goes on too long

Donald Trump expressed support for restricting voting rights: stumping for Louisiana Senate candidate John Neely Kennedy, the president-elect recalled seeing extremely long lines in Florida during the state's early voting period ahead of Election Day, suggesting "many things can go wrong" with so much time allocated to allow citizens to vote.

"They had that long early voting in Florida. It's so long, and so many things can go wrong when you have that long period of time, right?" Trump told the crowd in Baton Rouge. "That long, long, long period. Used to be you'd have a day, you vote. Now you're going forever. Weeks and weeks."

The president-elect, who continually suggested throughout his campaign that the election was rigged against him, added that he's curious about what occurs when early voting precincts are "locked": "I wonder what happens during the evenings when those places are 'locked,' right?" Trump said, using air quotes.

Donald Trump: Our news media is the enemy of the people

President Trump on Sunday again launched a blistering Twitter attack on the media, a day before his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Heading to Helsinki, Finland--looking forward to meeting with President Putin tomorrow," Trump tweeted. "Unfortunately, no matter how well I do at the Summit, if I was given the great city of Moscow as retribution for all of the sins and evils committed by Russia over the years, I would return to criticism that it wasn't good enough--that I should have gotten Saint Petersburg in addition!"

"Much of our news media is indeed the enemy of the people and all the Dems know how to do is resist and obstruct!" Trump added. "This is why there is such hatred and dissension in our country--but at some point, it will heal!"

Eric Holder: File lawsuits to enforce fair redistricting for 2020

In the months ahead, Holder plans to expand the scope of his opposition to Trump. Part of that expansion will center on the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, a new, Obama-backed group that's working to prepare Democrats for 2020, when states will redraw the boundaries of their legislative and congressional districts for the first time in a decade. "Up until my now our efforts have been largely organizational--raising funds, generating support," Holder told Yahoo News. "But now we're moving into an operational phase where we'll be filing lawsuits and I'll be more visible talking about those issues."

"We have come too far as a nation, sacrificed too much, made too much progress, to allow the state of our nation to be undermined by the extreme part of a divided minority administration," Holder said, describing Trumpism as "the worst of us."

Jeff Sessions: 1986: Voting Rights Act of 1965 is "intrusive legislation"

Expect Democrats to bring up Sessions's role as attorney-general in overseeing voting rights, even after federal monitoring of state and local election rules has been sharply reduced by the Supreme Court. During his confirmation hearing back in 1986, Sessions agreed that he had called the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) a "piece of intrusive legislation." By the time he became a senator his tone had greatly changed. He voted to reauthorise the VRA and sponsored legislation to honour with the Congressional Gold Medal the black civil rights marchers in Selma, Alabama, who endured racist violence at the hands of local police to promote the cause of voting. In Senate hearings Sessions frequently said that there had been serious racial discrimination against blacks in the South.

Jeff Sessions: The South has changed; no longer any need to monitor voting

Sessions sided with those conservatives who argued that the South had changed, making it unnecessary to maintain Section Five of the Voting Rights Act which obliged a long list of jurisdictions with a history of racism to seek federal "preclearance" for any change to electoral laws, down to the location of polling places. In time the Supreme Court would come to agree with Sessions and colleagues, striking down Section Five.

Democrats and civil-rights groups charge that Republican-run state governments across the South responded with a spate of laws making it harder to vote. As a senator Sessions has opposed calls for Congress to step in and restore federal powers over voting laws, saying in 2014: "To pass a law in the U.S. Congress that provides penalties only to some states and not to others can only be justified for the most extraordinary circumstances. And the justification no longer exists."

Mike Pompeo: Russian hacking impact 2016 election & not the first time

On intelligence reports of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Asked by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virginia) if he accepts the conclusions of the U.S. intelligence community on Russian attempts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, Pompeo said, "Everything I've seen suggests to me that the report has an analytical product that is sound."

Sen. Feinstein also asked Pompeo for his views on the report, to which he responded, "It's pretty clear what took place here, with Russian involvement in efforts to hack information and to have an impact on American democracy. I'm very clear-eyed about what that intelligence report says. This is very real. It is growing. It is not new, in that sense. This was an aggressive action taken by the senior leadership inside of Russia and America has an obligation, and the CIA is part of that obligation, to protect that information."

Ryan Zinke: Work with states and rebuild national parks

Zinke was nominated for secretary of the interior; here is what we learned from Zinke's hearing with the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Zinke described his three broad goals if he is confirmed: "The first is to restore trust by working with rather than against local communities and states. I fully recognize that there is distrust, anger, and even hatred against some federal management policies. Being a listening advocate rather than a deaf adversary is a good start. Second, is to prioritize the estimated $12.5 billion in backlog of maintenance and repair in our National Parks. The President elect is committed to a jobs and infrastructure bill, and I am going to need your help in making sure that bill includes shoring up our Nation's treasures. And third, to ensure the professionals on the front line, our rangers and field managers, have the right tools, right resources, and flexibility to make the right decisions that give a voice to the people they serve."
