Trump campaign vs. Trump administration: on Principles & Values

Betsy DeVos: Chaired Michigan GOP; husband was 2006 Governor nominee

Betsy DeVos is a reformer. At Calvin College, the young Elisabeth Prince undertook her vocation, becoming involved with campus politics and remaining politically active ever since. For more than 30 years, Mrs. DeVos has led a variety of campaigns, party organizations, and political action committees, including six years as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. The reforming tendency runs in her family--in 2006 her husband, Dick DeVos, was the Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan.

Donald Trump: We are transferring power from Washington to the people

Today we are not merely transferring power from one Administration to another, or from one party to another--but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American People.

For too long, a small group in our nation's Capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished--but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered--but the jobs left, and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.

That all changes--starting right here, and right now, because this moment is your moment: it belongs to you. What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.

January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. Everyone is listening to you now.

Donald Trump: Open-border socialism brings suffering, misery and decay

The truth is that the centrist Democratic Party is dead. The new Democrats are radical socialists who want to model America's economy after Venezuela.

Government-run health care is just the beginning. Democrats are also pushing massive government control of education, private-sector businesses and other major sectors of the US economy.

Every single citizen will be harmed by such a radical shift in American culture and life. Virtually everywhere it has been tried, socialism has brought suffering, misery and decay.

Indeed, the Democrats' commitment to government-run health care is all the more menacing when paired with some Democrats' absolute commitment to end enforcement of our immigration laws. That means millions more would cross our borders illegally and take advantage of health care paid for by American taxpayers.

Today's Democratic Party is for open-borders socialism. This radical agenda would destroy American prosperity. Under its vision, costs will spiral out of control.

James Mattis: Dislikes nickname Mad Dog Mattis

Mattis, a retired Marine Corps general, was approved as Mr. Trump's choice for defense secretary by the Senate Armed Services Committee, 24 to 3. Fun fact: He doesn't care for the nickname "Mad Dog." Here are highlights from the hearings:<

Jeff Sessions: Total fidelity to the laws and the Constitution

The office of the attorney general of the United States is not a political position, and anyone who holds it must have total fidelity to the laws and the Constitution of the United States. He or she must be committed to following the law. He or she must be willing to tell the president "no" if he overreaches. He or she cannot be a mere rubber stamp to any idea the president has. He or she also must set the example for the employees in the department to do the right thing and ensure that they know the attorney general will back them up, no matter what politician might call, or what powerful special interest, influential contributor, or friend might try to intervene. The message must be clear: Everyone is expected to do their duty.

That is the way I was expected to perform as an assistant US attorney. That is the way I trained my assistants when I became US attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. And if confirmed, that is the way I will run the Department of Justice.

Mike Pence: When criticized about Jesus, I breath a prayer of praise

Vice President Mike Pence turned to the Bible when asked recently what he makes of a new critical biography that calls him as a "Christian supremacist." "The Bible says count it all joy when you endure trials of many kinds," Pence told the Christian Broadcasting Network. "Any time I'm criticized for my belief in Jesus Christ, I just breath a prayer of praise."

In "The Shadow President: The Truth About Mike Pence," that came out this week, authors Michael D'Antonio and Peter Eisner cast Pence's background--congressman, Indiana governor, Trump VP--in a harsh light, arguing that "the most successful Christian supremacist in American history" is already functioning as a "kind of replacement president" and is preparing to "fashion a nation more pleasing to his god and corporate sponsors."

Pence has long described himself as a "Christian, a conservative and a Republican--in that order."

Scott Pruitt: Double headline - Already Done

The views Scott Pruitt states [on a 2005 radio show], in discussions peppered with references to inalienable rights and the faith of the nation's founders, are in line with those of millions of other conservative, devout Christians. But they also show stances that at times are at odds with the broader American mainstream.

Pruitt weighed in on a 2005 Supreme Court case that involved a display of the Ten Commandments at the Texas State Capitol. He argued that prohibiting such displays elevated atheist beliefs above Jewish and Christian ones.

Federal courts have interpreted the Constitution to require the separation of church and state, including a 1947 decision prohibiting New Jersey from using public funds to bus students to Catholic schools.

Pruitt disagreed, saying: "I think the most grievous threat that we have today is this imperialistic judiciary, that has it wrong on what the First Amendment's about and has an objective to create religious sterility in the public square."

Scott Pruitt: Double headline - Already Done

Scott Pruitt lamented that "minority religions" were pushing Christianity out of "the public square." In the current political atmosphere, Pruitt said, "We're saying to a certain category of religion, 'No, you can't be a part of the public square, because you are the majority religion, historically. We're going to make sure that the minority religions are built up and encouraged, but the majority religion is going to be shifted aside.' Now that violates, again, individual liberty."

[However, on the same radio show in 2005], hHe frequently referred to atheism and humanism, which stresses the potential for humans to be good, as religions that enjoy more rights to expression than Christianity.

Pruitt isn't the first EPA administrator to openly express his or her religious faith, of course. His immediate predecessor, Gina McCarthy, was a Roman Catholic who visited top officials at the Vatican in 2015 as church officials worked to write Pope Francis' climate change encyclical.

Thomas Perez: Trump 2016 Russian collusion was unprecedented treachery

The Democratic Party sued President Donald Trump's presidential campaign, the Russian government and the Wikileaks group, claiming a broad conspiracy to help Trump win the 2016 election.

Tom Perez, the DNC chairman, said, "This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery: the campaign of a nominee for President of the United States in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency."

Perez said the Russian government notified the Trump campaign in advance that it had stolen Democratic emails and other information about plans by the party that Russia sought to support Trump's candidacy.

"Rather than reporting Russia's offer to meddle in a U.S. election, the Trump campaign welcomed Russia's help," Perez said. "Trump's closest political adviser, Roger Stone, also appeared to have advance knowledge of specific plans by WikiLeaks to disseminate some of this information."
