Trump Cabinet members actions and issues: on Environment

Rick Perry: Simultaneous economic growth & environmental protection

Perry's leadership of Texas proved that economic growth and protection of the environment can be achieved simultaneously. While adding population and more than 2.2 million jobs during his tenure, Texas also experienced major reductions in carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions. Despite having a rapidly growing population and one of the largest petrochemical refining industries in the world, Texas saw its air quality improve.

Ryan Zinke: End ban on lead bullets & fishing tackle in wildlife refuges

On his first full day in office, Zinke rescinded the policy implemented on January 19, 2017, the last day of the Obama administration, that banned the use of lead bullets and lead fishing tackle in national wildlife refuges. Zinke said: "Over the past eight years hunting, and recreation enthusiasts have seen trails closed and dramatic decreases in access to public lands across the board. It worries me to think about hunting and fishing becoming activities for the land-owning elite. This package of secretarial orders will expand access for outdoor enthusiasts and also make sure the community's voice is heard." The regulation was meant to help prevent lead contamination of plants and animals.

The move was opposed by the Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, and other environmental groups. The rollback was praised by the National Rifle Association, as well as other "gun rights advocates, sportsmen's groups, conservatives and state wildlife agencies."

Sonny Perdue: Responsibility is to leave the land better than we found it

Perdue will always remember that America's agricultural bounty comes directly from the land. And today, those land resources sustain more than 320 million Americans and countless millions more around the globe. Perdue's father's words still ring true: We're all stewards of the land, owned or rented, and our responsibility is to leave it better than we found it.

As a youngster growing up on a dairy and diversified row crop farm in rural Georgia, it was the family farm which shaped Sonny Perdue. He has lived and breathed the exhilaration of a great crop and the despair and devastation of a drought. He learned by experience what his father told him as a child, "If you take care of the land, the land will take care of you."

Mick Mulvaney: You can't drain the swamp and leave all the people in it

In March 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing agencies to prepare for a reorganization of the entire federal government. Soon after, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney outlined a proposal to reduce the size of the federal workforce, stating, "You can't drain the swamp and leave all the people in it."

For example, in June 2017, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke initiated a temporary hiring freeze for most National Park Service personnel that prevented numerous parks from filling key positions. Zinke said at that time that he planned to cut his workforce by 4,000 employees, roughly 8% of Interior's full-time staff.

In May, at a time when park staff were already stretched thin, Zinke ordered law enforcement staff from national parks across the country to two parks on the US-Mexico border. Zinke has not provided justification for an increase in law enforcement staff at the border at a time of historically low border crossing apprehensions.

Elaine Chao: Environmental regulations create roadblocks and delays

While Chao's speech was short on specifics, the secretary again touted the potential benefits of turning certain public assets over to the private sector, arguing it "better protects the taxpayers by identifying and mitigating risk." Chao also praised the directive coming from the administration toward streamlining environmental regulations, which at times, she said, create "roadblocks and delays that hold up infrastructure for years, even decades."
