Daniel Coats: Russia abuses social media in anti-democracy information war

Russia's approach [to foreign affairs with the West] relies on misdirection and obfuscation as it seeks to destabilize and diminish our standing in the world.

Even as Russia faces a weakening economy, the Kremlin is stepping up its campaign to divide Western political and security institutions and undermine the post-WWII international order. We expect Russia will continue to wage its information war against democracies and to use social media to attempt to divide our societies.

Russia's attack against Ukrainian naval vessels in November is just the latest example of the Kremlin's willingness to violate international norms to coerce its neighbors and accomplish its goals. We also expect Russia will use cyber techniques to influence Ukraine's upcoming Presidential election.

The Kremlin has aligned Russia with repressive regimes in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and Venezuela, and Moscow's relationship with Beijing is closer than it has been in many decades.

Wilbur Ross: Space race to stimulate economic growth across industries

Speaking at the Aerospace Industry Association's board of governors meeting, Ross said the global space economy is now worth $400 billion annually, up from about $340 billion in 2016. Ross submitted legislation last month to create a "Bureau of Space Commerce," which, if approved, would support efforts by private and public firms to expand space tourism, manufacturing, prospecting and other initiatives. "Today there is a new space race - but this time, it is being run in the private sector. .

Elaine Chao: Specialized in transportation financing in private sector

Secretary Chao comes to the U.S. Department of Transportation with extensive experience in the transportation sector. Early in her career, she specialized in transportation financing in the private sector. She began her executive career in public service working on transportation and trade issues at the White House. She then served as Deputy Maritime Administrator, U. S. Department of Transportation; Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission; and, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Secretary Chao understands the critical role of the Department in ensuring the safety of our country's transportation systems. She is also keenly aware of the key role infrastructure plays in our nation's economic competitiveness, and in strengthening economic growth in both the urban and rural areas of our country.

Elaine Chao: Slow permitting process blocking private sector investments

The Trump administration's proposal aims to spend $200 billion in federal funding to spur a total of $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investment, with states, localities and private industry covering the difference. "While there is a great deal of enthusiasm from the private sector to participate, one of the hurdles they face is the lack of ready projects," Chao said. "If the permitting process can be sped up, it will allow more projects to be available for the private sector to invest."
