Barney Frank in Winning Right, by Ed Gillespie

On Principles & Values: Press accused Dick Armey of anti-gay slur against him

Armey had decided to donate all his royalties [from his memoir] to charity. He explained his decision to forgo the money and the political fallout, saying he didn't want to deal with "Barney Frank haranguing in my ear." Barney Frank is the liberal congressman from Boston who revels in skewering Republicans. Barney Frank was also the most prominent openly gay member of Congress.

As Armey said the words "Barney Frank haranguing in my ear," he mangled them, as was his habit. The AP radio correspondent said, "It sounds like he said 'Barney Fag.' Whether it was a slip of the tongue of not, he said it."

Armey was clearly pained that people would think him a bigot. "This morning I mispronounced the name of my friend and colleague Barney Frank in a way that sounds like a slur. The media and others are reporting this as if it were intentional, and it was not. I take strong exception to the airing of the tape and even the transcribing of a stumbled word as if it were an intentional attack.
