On Civil Rights: Charlottesville: you had very fine people on both sides

At the [summer 2017] press briefing, the questions were about Charlottesville. He took out his statement: "As I said, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence." He left out the part about "very fine people on both sides," but this time he added, "The alt-left came charging at the rally. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. And nobody wants to say that, but I'll say it right now.

"Not all those people were Neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all those people were white supremacists, by any stretch. Many of those people were there to protect the statue of Robert E. Lee. I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson after that?" Both had been slave owners he noted. "You really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?"

On Foreign Policy: You can never show weakness; you've got to project strength

In a tweet on September 23, Trump called [North Korean President] Kim "Little rocket Man". Trump was in the president's front cabin on Air Force One; Fox News was on the TV. "Little Rocket Man", Trump said proudly. "I think that may be my best nickname ever."

"It's funny," [said one advisor], "and it certainly seems to have gotten under Kim's skin." But, he asked, "What's the end game here if we continue to amp up the rhetoric and get into a war of words and it escalates, what are you hoping to get out of this? How does this end?"

"You can never show weakness," Trump replied. "You've got to project strength. Kim and others need to be convinced that I'm prepared to do anything to back up our interests."

On Immigration: Why are we having people from sh--hole countries come here?

Graham began walking through the plan, which included the money Trump asked for on the border security. It was not enough, Trump said, condescendingly. Graham said he was sure they could do more but this is where they started. And he mentioned 25,000 visas from mostly African countries. He turned to the visas in such places as Haiti and El Salvador because of Earthquakes, famine, and violence.

"Haitians," Trump said. "We don't need more Haitian's." At that and mentioned of immigrants from African countries. "Why are we having all these people from sh--hole countries come here?" He had just met with the Prime Minister from Norway. Why not more Norwegians? Or Asians who could help the economy.

On Technology: Twitter is the reason I got elected and am successful

When Trump and Kim Jong Un ramped up the rhetoric, he was warned, "Twitter could get us into a war."

"This is my megaphone, " Trump said again. "Let's not call it Twitter, let's call it social media." Though the White House had Facebook and Instagram accounts, Trump did not use them. He stuck to Twitter. "This is who I am. This is how I communicate. It's how I got elected. It's the reason I'm successful.

The tweets were not included to his presidency. They were central. He ordered printouts to his recent tweets that had received a high number of likes, 200,000 or more. He studied them to find out the common themes in the most successful.
