Education:
- Episcopal High School, Alexandria VA (1954)
- US Naval Academy (1958).
- Graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis.
Professional Experience:
- After graduating from the US Naval Academy, McCain became a naval aviator and served a 22-year navy career, retiring as a Captain in 1981.
- In 1967, he was shot down over Hanoi and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years (1967-73).
- Has received numerous awards, including the Silver Star; Bronze Star; Legion of Merit; Purple Heart; and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Political Experience:
- House of Representatives, 1982-86
- US Senate, 1986-present.
- Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
- Serves on the Armed Services and Indian Affairs Committees.
- Chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI) since 1993.
