- Graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis.
Professional Experience:
- After graduating from the US Naval Academy, McCain became a naval aviator and served a 22-year navy career, retiring as a Captain in 1981.
- In 1967, he was shot down over Hanoi and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years (1967-73).
- Has received numerous awards, including the Silver Star; Bronze Star; Legion of Merit; Purple Heart; and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
