Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Education

Expanded education freedom to more than 5000 students

Before this year, Arkansas families had no choice where to send their kids to school. LEARNS expanded education freedom to more than five thousand students in just one year. 50 percent of those students have learning disabilities. Year One of the LEARNS Act targeted the most at-risk students in our state. But education freedom is for everyone, and soon, Education Freedom Accounts will be too.

Education is a civil rights issue: give parents choice

I believe giving every child access to a quality education--regardless of their race or income--is the civil rights issue of our day. I will unveil an education package that will be the most far reaching, bold, conservative education reform in the country. My plan empowers parents with real choices, improves literacy and career readiness, and helps put a good teacher in every classroom by increasing their starting salary from one of the lowest to one of the highest in the nation.

Offer more choices to parents of kids in failing schools

[On school choice]: "I will champion good schools and good teachers, but also offer more choices to parents of kids in failing schools," she continued. "Every child must have the opportunity of a quality education--and no child should ever be trapped in a life of poverty and despair."

Graduated proudly from integrated Little Rock High School

Forty years after the Supreme Court's landmark "Brown vs. Board of Education" decision of 1954, as a student at Central High, I cheered alongside thousands of students, parents, and dignitaries from around the world as President Bill Clinton and my dad, Governor Mike Huckabee, helped open up the door of Central High for the Little Rock Nine--the same doors that were previously closed to them because they were black.

Our student body president, an African American girl, also spoke in front of the world and speak out for civil rights. It was a reminder to all of us that day and around the world how far America and Arkansas had come.

The Little Rock Nine bravely advanced equality in America, and today Central High is one of the most racially diverse and high-achieving schools in the state. I loved my experience there. My time at Central exposed me to all different backgrounds, lifestyles, and viewpoints. I am very proud to have graduated from Little Rock Central High.
