Robin Carnahan on Immigration

Honor Missouri's immigrant women

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan today announced a program celebrating the significance of Missouri' immigrant women. "I'm pleased to announce a historic program that illustrates the hard work and perseverance of our state's immigrant women," said Carnahan.

The program, Immigrant Women in the Settlement of Missouri, uses historical photographs to tell the story of the immigrants who came to Missouri in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and the many challenges they faced. One of the most difficult and important of these, the task of feeding families, fell most directly on women. Through hard work, ingenuity and a willingness to adapt to the demands of their new environment, immigrant women in Missouri's cities and rural areas alike found ways to put food on the family table.

This presentation is partially sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council. The Missouri State Archives is the official repository for state documents of permanent historic value.
