Tim Pawlenty on Families & Children

Republican MN Governor

Lost mother at 16; needed & felt God's presence

God was and is the firm foundation upon which I rely in times of trouble, and the one to whom I offer praise and thanks for the many ways He's blessed my life. The loss of my mother marks the first time I remember asking fervently for God's help. I always considered myself a believer in God, but like most young boys, I wasn't thrilled to sit in church every Sunday. Quite simply, it seemed boring. My parents instilled that seed of faith in me.

It would take years before I fully understood the power and meaning of faith in God, before I fully absorbed the importance of what Christ has done for me, for all of us, before I would study the Bible on my own and accept God's grace with the full intentions of an adult mind. But at sixteen years old, I needed and felt God's presence like never before. With the loss of my mother, I came to understand that God was still there and always would be, both present and in control. Trusting Him to be in charge was my best hope.
