Herman Cain on Government Reform

Republican Businessman & Talk-Show Host; 2011 GOP frontrunner

Require photo IDs to vote, to end fraud

We need to have standards and not make it easy for people to cheat on things. You can't get on an airplane without showing a valid ID. Why should we allow people to do other things without IDs. Photo IDs are needed and should be required to vote to end fraud. WHY NOT? People who are fighting to require voter ID are people who want cheating to continue in the voting process. There is much more cheating going on than people want to admit.

Cut through all bureaucracy; reduce regulatory authority

Q: As President, if you could enact any policy to fix the economy without congressional approval what would it be?

A: As President, I would reduce the regulatory authority of executive agencies in order to ease burdens on businesses. I would limit the EPA, Department of Energy and other executive agencies from getting in the way of businesses. A President Cain would lower the regulations that the government puts on businesses and cut through all possible bureaucracy.

Yes, federal government should be doing food safety

Q: On food safety, you worked in the business.

CAIN: Yes.

Q: You see the E. coli scare that's going on in Europe right now. You're trying to cut money. The FDA, other agencies that get involved in that are in front of you. What do you do?

CAIN: You look inside the FDA and determine whether or not it needs to be streamlined, and maybe it does.

Q: But should the federal government be doing food safety inspections?

CAIN: The federal government should be doing food safety, yes.

Government shouldn't pick winners & losers

Q: The federal government now assists many industries. What standards do you have for government assistance to private enterprise?

PAUL: There shouldn't be any government assistance to private enterprise. It's not morally correct; it's illegal; it's ba economics.

Q: Mr. Cain, you initially supported the TARP program?

CAIN: I studied the financial meltdown and concluded on my own that we needed to do something drastic, yes. When the concept of TARP was first presented to the public, I was willing to go along with it. But then when the administration started to implement it on a discretionary basis, picking winners and losers and also directing funds to General Motors and others that had nothing to do with the financial system, that's where I totally disagreed. The government should not be selecting winners and losers, and I don't believe in this concept of too big to fail. If they fail, the free market will figure out who's going to pick up the pieces.

No comment on McCain-Feingold nor Citizens United

Club For Growth policy: Maximizing prosperity requires sound government policies. When government strays from these policies, citizens must be free to exercise their constitutional rights to petition and criticize those policies and the politicians responsible for them.

Herman Cain appears to have not made any public comment on McCain-Feingold, Citizens United, or any other issue dealing with political free speech.
