Jim Gilmore on Gun Control

Senate challenger 2008; previously Republican Governor (VA)

On NRA board to protect 2nd amendment

I am a board member of the National Rifle Association. The reason is I believe that individuals can be trusted to exercise their rights under the Second Amendment and under the Bill of Rights. To take away people's Second Amendment rights is to redefine the individual in the society, and I'm not going to put up with it.

Virginia Exile: get guns out of the hands of criminals

Jim Gilmore believes gun ownership is based on the American tradition of personal responsibility and he is committed to protecting the rights of hunters, sportsmen and gun owners.

Jim Gilmore is a member of the National Rifle Association's Board of Directors and has spent much of his life working to protect our 2nd Amendment rights. Jim Gilmore believes the right to keep and bear arms is entitled to the same protection as every other amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

As Governor, Gilmore created Virginia Exile to get guns out of the hands of criminals. His efforts as Attorney General and Governor, including the abolition of parole and truth in the sentencing of criminals, reduced Virginia crime rates to a 25-year low.

Strike down unconstitutional bans on possessing a firearm

Former Governor and current Senate candidate Jim Gilmore hailed the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn the District of Columbia's ban on possessing a firearm as a victory for the Second Amendment. He says, "Like all Virginia gun owners, sportsmen and hunters I am pleased by the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the unconstitutional ban on possessing a firearm."

Gilmore, a member of the Board of Directors for the National Rifle Association, has been an outspoken advocate for the Second Amendment. "I have always believed that personal and responsible firearm ownership is a fundamental right guaranteed to us by the Constitution and we must only punish those who use firearms illegally to commit crimes," says Gilmore. "I will vote to ensure the 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding citizens are never infringed upon by the Federal government."

Gilmore notes, "Today is another reminder of the necessity of appointing strict constructionist judges who properly interpret the Constitution.

Supporter of 2nd Amendment rights; Americans can be trusted

Q: How is your track record on second amendment rights?

A: I am a supporter of Second Amendment rights, and all of the other rights under the Bill of Rights. The right to keep and bear arms is a reflection that we as Americans can be trusted to be free.

More gun convictions means less violent crime

In its first full year of operation, Virginia Exile has put 95 violent, gun law violators in prison for at least five years. Those convictions, out of 111 cases, produced an 86% conviction rate. Virginia Exile’s success has attracted wide attention, from other states, major cities, and in Congress, which approved a national Exile law based on our model. Thanks to this new approach to gun violence in Virginia, violent crime is down and our communities are safer.
