Fight climate change and prepare for flood and fire
We have to fight climate change with such urgency. We have seen it in historic floods in my community. I had to activate our emergency operation center for a once-in-a- millennium flood. Then two years later had to do the same thing.
This is no longer in the future. We have got to act, yes, to adapt, to make sure communities are more resilient, to make sure our economy is ready for the consequences that are going to happen one way or the other.

Regulate plastics; incentives for non-plastic replacements
Q: The amount of plastic produced in a year is roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity. And it doesn't go away. What would you do? Plenty of Democrats want to make polluters pay but does that apply to every company that puts harmful
packaging out into the waste stream?BUTTIGEIG: It does, because this is one more example of where corporations are literally pushing out the true cost of what they do into a place where it can't be seen only it comes back to us.
It ruins environments and it is profoundly irresponsible. So we need to make sure that we have regulations and incentives that promote things like biodegradable alternatives to plastic. There's already so much going into this--we've got to
double down on those kinds of investments so that we feel proud rather than guilty when we do handle something that takes the place of plastic, looks like plastic but it is much more responsible for the environment.

impossible to decarbonize the power sector and fight climate change without maintaining nuclear power, because it offers more capacity than renewables and is more reliable to dispatch since it does not rely on the wind or sunshine.

As mayor, installed "River Lights" outdoor art for $700,000
From the Jefferson Boulevard Bridge, you can see the man-made rapids in the river and the River Lights, a permanent legacy of our 2015 anniversary celebrations. We raised over $700,000 to have an artist install a dynamic light feature to illuminate
the cascades of the river in sweeping and shifting colors. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 153 volunteered the labor to set up the lights. Like all good public art, it has a charismatic quality that invites people to come up
close to it, and to mix with others not like them. On summer evenings you will see clusters of people, clearly from different neighborhoods and lifestyles, walking in the park overlooking the cascades among lighted towers that responded to motion
with patterns matching the lights on the water below. The colors of the light sculpture make up a universal language; very different faces light up the same way, responding to the hues, when it surprises them with a burst of gold or pink.
