State of New Mexico secondary Archives: on Abortion

Ben Ray Lujan: Roe v. Wade is law of the land; should not be overturned

A moderator pressed the candidates on whether they support overturning Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 decision that established abortion rights nationwide. Ronchetti said "it's a very difficult question to answer only because you don't know what the case will be." Lujan said the Roe v. Wade decision is "the law of the land and should not be overturned."

Ben Ray Lujan: Ensure that abortion remains safe and legal

Abortion is a key part of women's health, equality, and economic security. But politicians continue to pass laws with the goal of making it more difficult--if not impossible--for women to get an abortion. We need to protect women's health and ensure that abortion remains safe and legal. Medical decisions should be made by patients and doctors, not politicians.

Ben Ray Lujan: NARAL Endorsement: Has a 100% pro-choice record

NARAL Pro-Choice America, which advocates for abortion rights has endorsed Lujan. "NARAL is proud to endorse Congressman Lujan, a staunch advocate for reproductive freedom who for a decade has demonstrated his commitment to fighting for women and families in Congress," NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said. NARAL said Lujan has consistently a 100% score in the Congressional Record on choice.

Bob Walsh: Right to privacy including all medical treatments

Q: Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

A: We all have equal birthrights. Your birthright includes a right to privacy, not because of where you were born, but because you are human and all humans have that birthright. Your right of privacy covers your medical records, including conversations with and treatments by your medical provider. If anyone is required to disclose that information, then no one has a right to privacy, and your medical records become public information. If the right to privacy is secured, then abortion may not be disclosed, and a ban on abortion is not enforceable in any straightforward manner. I support all efforts to reduce the frequency of abortion, including advocacy of abstinence, private distribution of contraceptives, promotion of adoption, and private support of young mothers.

Gavin Clarkson: Oppose taxpayer funded abortions, & Planned Parenthood

Q: Do you favor or oppose limits on late-term abortion, and do you believe tax dollars should or should not be used to fund abortions?

A: I oppose partial birth abortion, taxpayer funded abortions, and would vote to cut off any and all funding for Planned Parenthood. I will advocate for legislation that protects the unborn at all ages and stages of life, including fetal pain legislation and significant restrictions on abortions after 20 weeks.

Gavin Clarkson: Ban late-term abortions; no tax dollars to fund abortions

I support banning late-term abortions. Tax dollars should never be used to fund abortions. My pro-life activism started in high school. While in grad school at Harvard, I chaired a Christian abortion alternative center empowering young women to make the choice for life regardless of personal, family, or financial circumstances.

Mark Ronchetti: Unborn babies just happen to be living inside their mother

Mark believes life is a gift from God and every person has dignity and worth. Life should be protected--at all stages. With respect to abortion, he is strongly pro-life. Mark is appalled by the insistence of so many on the left that abortion should be allowed up to the very point of birth. He believes unborn babies have souls, can feel emotions, and are every bit a human being; they just happen to be living inside their mother.

Mark Ronchetti: Oppose late term abortion, support ban on federal funding

I absolutely oppose late term abortions. The fact that New Mexico is one of the late term abortion capitals of the country is a tragedy. I do not believe federal funds should be used to fund abortion. I support the Hyde Amendment which is currently the law of the land.

Mark Ronchetti: No federal funding for abortion

I strongly oppose late-term abortions, and the fact my opponent support abortion up to the point of birth is horrifying. I do not believe federal funds should be used to fund abortion. I support the Hyde Amendment which is currently the law of the land.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham: Repeal outdated criminal abortion laws

And let us show the women of this state that we will not allow faraway federal judges to determine autonomy over their bodies. The old criminal abortion law of this state, one of only nine left in the country, must go. Bring me that bill. I will sign it.

Mick Rich: Abortion rips the moral fabric of our nation

The right to life is the civil rights issue of our time. We must protect the unborn and their mothers, the elderly, people with disabilities and terminal diseases, and other rejected and threatened members of society. Mick believes that life begins at conception, and that abortion harms everyone touched by it. It rips the moral fabric of our nation. We must end this divisive national tragedy as soon as possible, so that once again, America can serve as a beacon of human rights around the world.

Rebecca Dow: Pull back the reins on the radical abortion agenda

New Mexico has a reputation as the late-term abortion capital of the nation. Even so, progressive Democrats in Santa Fe fought to expand abortion access, including forcing the repeal of a "conscience clause" which states that doctors may refuse to provide an abortion if it is against their conscience or deeply held beliefs. She will fight for the Constitutional right to life and pull back the reins on the radical abortion agenda of the current Governor and her liberal friends in the Roundhouse.

Rebecca Dow: Let health care professionals refuse to perform abortions

HB 51 would have repealed the only enforceable law: the right of facilities, physicians, or health care workers to refuse to perform an abortion based on conscientious objection. I will continue to vote against bills that restrict the rights of New Mexico health care professionals to opt out of performing abortions.

Mark Ronchetti: 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape & incest

Abortion was an immediate flash point. Lujan Grisham highlighted her signing of a bill that repealed New Mexico's criminal abortion law. "Women have a choice in New Mexico today because I'm governor," she said.

Ronchetti described himself as "pro-life" but said voters should decide the issue through a constitutional amendment. "The values of the people in the state of New Mexico have to be taken into account," he said. Ronchetti has faced negative ads on the issue, some of which highlight the comments of an Albuquerque megachurch pastor who announced from the pulpit that--after talking to Ronchetti for hours--he believes Ronchetti wants to end abortion in New Mexico but can't say so publicly because it would damage his election chances.

Ronchetti has called for a 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest or risks to the mother's life, and he has also proposed the issue be decided by voters in a special election.
