State of South Dakota secondary Archives: on Local Issues

Kristi Noem: Maintain state as "pheasant capital of the world"

There is another area where we are already a leader--South Dakota is the pheasant capital of the world. Other states are pursuing that title. Pheasant hunting is a statewide tradition. For a century we have been the premier destination for hunters. And I want to make sure that title is ours in the century to come. With neighboring states trying to steal away our hunters, I'm calling on all of us to recognize this threat and join me in doing what it takes to improve and expand our habitat.

Kristi Noem: Occupational licensing laws represent a burden

Occupational licensing laws represent a burden. South Dakota is prepared to be an example of reform for the nation. We will work to decrease wait time for license approval. We will find ways to increase transparency by requiring Advisory Committees to adhere to Open Meeting Laws. We will review the complaint and disciplinary processes for all boards and commissions. And we will identify opportunities to allow reciprocity.

Dennis Daugaard: South Dakotans believe in hard work

South Dakotans believe in hard work. When we promote South Dakota as a good place to do business, we promote the work ethic of our people. Those who do business in multiple states, including South Dakota, will often remark to me that their South Dakota location is their most productive, because South Dakotans know how to work. In short, South Dakota works because South Dakota's people know how to work. We succeed and excel because we work hard and stay true to our values. We can be proud of the many ways in which South Dakota excels. During the past year, objective outsiders have recognized our state for excellence. Last April, the United States Chamber of Commerce recognized South Dakota as having the nation's "Best Business Climate." Last June, their study identified South Dakota as having the lowest cost of living in the nation. Then, in July, CNBC named South Dakota "America's Top State for Business."
