State of Massachusetts Archives: on Foreign Policy

Brian Herr: I believe in diplomacy; but keep terrorists out

On foreign affairs, Herr said he is not a "hawk" and that he believes in diplomacy. But he does not endorse a withdrawal timetable for Afghanistan, thinking it emboldens the United States' enemies and puts troops at risk. He said Afghanistan needs to be secured so the Taliban and terrorists don't take control again.

"I don't want this to go on forever," he said. "It can't go on forever. But I think it's important to get people to know that we can't back down."

Steve Grossman: Former chair of pro-Israel lobby continues strong support

Grossman chaired the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, the major pro-Israel lobby, from 1992 until 1996. A friend of the late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, Grossman helped build support for the 1993 Oslo peace accords. He defends Israel in the current standoff: In the first debate, he countered Robert Reich’s call to fight terrorism by fighting poverty in the Arab world with his call to preserve “the only democracy in the Middle East.”
