Cheri Beasley: Increase resources for veterans, military families

Cheri will fight to ensure that the federal government honors its obligations to our service members, veterans and their families. We must expand investments to increase pay for service members, improve the infrastructure of VA health care facilities, increase resources for military families and expand the range of services the VA provides. Additionally, there is more we can do to help our veterans transition to civilian life, get jobs and increase awareness of and access to VA programs.

David Rouzer: Government needs to cut spending--but not for veterans

Our veterans have laid it all on the line for our country--for our freedoms. We must reform the Veterans Administration so that it is customer friendly and appropriate the funding necessary to ensure quality long-term care. No veteran who has served this country honorably should ever been in need of quality care for their physical and mental health needs.

Our goal should always be to provide our veterans and their families with the best we have to offer in career training, healthcare, and community support while they are both actively serving and afterwards. We should continue to listen to and encourage our military families through programs like the Army Family Action Plan.

The federal government needs to cut spending--but not in this area. The first budget passed by Congress appropriated more than 25% of the budget for pensions for disabled veterans. We should follow our Founders' example.

Marjorie K. Eastman: 10 years of military service included two combat deployments

Her ten years of post-9/11 military service include two combat deployments. She started out enlisted and received the rare honor of being awarded a direct commission within her first two years of service. She was ranked the #1 Military Intelligence Company Commander in Eastern Afghanistan for the deployment cycle of 2009-2010, awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service as a combat commander and received the Combat Action Badge.

Foreign adversaries are determined to exploit America's security weaknesses and wreak havoc on our lives--and North Carolina needs serious, qualified leaders who have already defended our country to lead the fight for security. North Carolina was hit harder than any other state by the recent cyberattack against Colonial Pipeline which left 71% of our gas stations empty for a week. Marjorie knows from her hard-earned experience in national security that the attack was what we call a rehearsal.

Pat McCrory: Establish state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs

At a time when so many servicemen and women are coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq through North Carolina, we must have an efficient and well-coordinated process in place to meet the needs of active duty personnel and veterans. These services are scattered across many areas of state government with no accountability, causing delay, frustration, and poor customer service.

We are going to do more to strengthen our Veteran Affairs and the Office of my Military Advisor. I am proposing the creation of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. This department will be responsible for, protecting and fighting our military bases, promoting the health and safety of our veterans and military families, helping our veterans get jobs, and working with the unique needs of base communities.

Paul Wright: End illegal spying on American citizens

SPYING ON AMERICANS--The Senate must end the illegal spying on American citizens without Constitutional search warrants. Communications between Americans in phone calls and emails should be just as private as their postal letters. Invasion of American privacy must end.

Paul Wright: Trillions wasted on war after war

America's foreign policy was once peaceful and we were a peace loving people. Though believing in strong defense (every man a rifle in his home), America left other nations alone, even on occasion helped them. We minded our own business. But today, not 1 in 50 adult Americans understand our foreign policy. We just "accept" it. War after war is just "announced" to us--no deliberation or legal Declaration of War from those elected to represent us, no, they just vote for the taxes to fund the "announced wars" which have no effect on the safety of America. As an example, has little Syria ever bothered us? No. We serve a small group of sly warmongers. But we are responsible for all their senseless, meaningless wars with thousands of our dead troops, tens of thousands of wounded warriors and veteran suicides, trillions of wasted money, millions of refugees, wounded, killed women and children. Let us immediately return to the peace loving America of our forefathers.
