Don't fight for abstractions; fight for people's homes
Vance, who served in Iraq with Marine Corps public affairs, took a different lesson from his deployment--that America shouldn't be fighting wars for lofty ideals like promoting democracy abroad."People will not fight for abstractions, but they
will fight for their home. And if this movement of ours is going to succeed, and if this country is going to thrive, our leaders have to remember that
America is a nation, and its citizens deserve leaders who put its interests first," he said, as he accepted the GOP nomination for vice president.
Vance has said in the past that the U.S. lacks the military industrial base to defend Ukraine against
Russia, and that countering the rise of China should be the priority. The Vance nomination swings the Trump ticket toward Republicans who call their approach "realism and restraint."

Facilitate peace in Russia-Ukraine, instead of US support
Vance sees unsettling similarities between the run-up to the Iraq War and current calls for more U.S. support to Ukraine. He said some of the same people who are most hawkish on Ukraine were the most hawkish on Iraq, showing lack of humility
about their previous misjudgment. Vance had previously been making the Iraq comparison in private with his Washington colleagues, he said, and thinks there is growing skepticism about U.S. Ukraine involvement and more belief that our
European allies should do more."I've been trying to make sure we don't take an escalatory posture," Vance said. The best role for the United States, he said, is to help facilitate a peaceful resolution to the
Russian-Ukraine conflict--which Trump claims he could do as president--and "prevent this thing from escalating into World War III."

Stop using America's military as social justice side project
Importantly, American political leaders should stop using America's military as a social justice side project.
Our troops don't need to focus on diversity or equity or any other progressive buzzword; they need to focus on fighting and winning America's wars.

Marine Corps prepares students well for college
I met with a guidance counselor who talked me through my first college schedule, which put me in class only four days per week, never before 9:30 in the morning. After the Marine Corps and its 5:30 A.M. wakeups, I couldn't believe my good fortune.
By the time I started at Ohio State, the Marine Corps had instilled in me an incredible sense of invincibility. I'd go to classes, do my homework, study at the library, and make it home in time to drink well past midnight with my buddies, then wake up
early to go running. My schedule was intense, but everything that had made me fear the independent college life when I was 18 felt like a piece of cake now. I knew that Ohio State was put-up-or-shut-up time. I had left the Marine Corps not just with
a sense that I could do what I wanted but also with the capacity to plan [such as for Law School].
I loathed debt and the sense of limitation it imposed. the GI Bill paid for a significant chunk of my education.
