Andrew Yang: Decarbonize US economy by 2035

Yang said, "The magic of Joe Biden is that everything he does becomes the new reasonable."

"If he comes with an ambitious template to address climate change, all of a sudden, everyone is going to follow his lead." He's floated a climate plan that would decarbonize the US economy by 2035. Waleed Shahid, the communications director for Justice Democrats, told Vox that Biden's policy slate is "the most progressive platform of any Democratic nominee in the modern history of the party."

Donald Trump: End war on coal: it's important for our defense

We have ended the war on American energy, we were in war. And we have ended the war on beautiful, clean, coal, one of our great natural resources. Very important for our defense, coal, very important for our defense, because we have it. We don't have to send it through pipes, we don't have to get it from foreign countries. We have more than anybody. And they wanted to end it, and our miners have been mistreated and are not being mistreated anymore. We're doing tremendous business.

Jay Inslee: Fighting climate change must be top goal of next president

Ultimately, I believe there is one central, defining, existential-with-a-capital-E threat to the future of the nation: climate change. It is clear that it will only be defeated if the United States shows leadership. And that will only happen if the US president makes it a clear priority--the number one, foremost, paramount goal of the next administration. And I believe I'm uniquely positioned, by willingness and history and vision, to be able to do that.

[When Obama won in 2008], the Democratic team said, "We're going to do health care first." And so climate didn't get done. Now, could it have gotten done if it was put first? There are no guarantees. But once health care went first, there wasn't enough juice to get climate through. We simply cannot have that experience again. So [climate change] can't be on a laundry list. It can't be something that candidates check the box on. It has to be a full-blooded effort to mobilize the United States in all capacities.

Jay Inslee: Supported renewable portfolio; supports Green New Deal

I was very involved in passing the renewable portfolio standard [in 2006]. We went from zero to a billion-dollar wind industry in the last several years. We have moved the needle on the electrification of our transportation system. We've [helped with] electric cars, because of the work we've been doing with incentives & building the electrical charging station grid on the interstate. We have created a clean energy research facility that's doing great work. We built a clean energy development program. So I would say we have had substantial progress here, and I have been involved in virtually all of that in some way.

I don't get to vote on it, but I am totally in sync and believe that it is exactly what I have said for decades. I think these aspirational goals are appropriate to the time and the scale. I love the fact that it is embracing economic justice issues as well. I think we have come to understand more about how marginalized communities have been the victims of climate change.

John Fetterman: Fracking acceptable if it brings thousands of jobs

Fetterman's rise hasn't been without some pushback. He's a self-proclaimed progressive, but those on the left haven't always been so sure of him.

Fetterman made clear that his positions on the environment are outweighed by his desire to bring work to his town, a trade-off he said Democrats have to make to protect the working class. He defended supporting a fracking proposal in his own town for that reason.

"We're Democrats. We are supposed to look after working-class families," he said. "If the steel mill that wants to do this goes under, that's 3,000 jobs lost. All they need to do is drill two wells."

The position didn't stop Sanders from supporting him, however, chalking it up to a difference of opinion. And it's clear Fetterman has been pegged as the progressive politician who can get elected.

Pope Francis: Climate change is a critical problem that must be addressed

The pope believes that man-made climate change is a critical problem that must be addressed by world leaders. Trump, on the other hand, has called climate change a hoax created by the Chinese, and wants to back out of the Paris climate accords.

Europeans seem to fall more in the pope's school of opinion. Indeed, when Trump arrived in Rome, he was greeted with an illuminated message blazoned across the dome of St. Peter's Basilica by environmental activists that read "Planet Earth First."

Elon Musk: Opposed Trump pulling out of Paris climate agreement

Trump's and Musk's differing views on climate change and clean energy have evidently become an irritant again. Recall that Musk, CEO of the electric car company Tesla, participated in White House councils during Trump's first term, but left after Trump began the process of pulling the US out of the Paris climate agreement.
