Defend LGBTQIA rights, including seniors

Jimmy is endorsed by Equality California and the Stonewall Democratic Club. In the Assembly, he successfully sponsored bills signed into law, which required senior care facilities to undergo training on serving LGBTQIA seniors, and another to change birth certificates for same gender couples. As Assembly Appropriations Chair, he helped to pass many other bills including Assembly Bill 959 to require the state to collect information based on sexual orientation in the course of demographic collection efforts. In Congress, Jimmy will oppose any effort to advance so-called "religious liberty" bills which are attempts to legitimize discrimination against LGBT individuals and families and maintain advances made by the Obama Administration to protect LGBT rights, protections and services. Retrofit facilities for Americans with Disabilities Act

In the Assembly, Jimmy sponsored legislation to help small businesses retrofit existing facilities to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and will take that approach to Washington to expand resources to help small businesses succeed and to invest in the infrastructure, education and transportation resources to expand opportunities for all Californians. Jimmy will protect Medicare and Social Security from GOP "restructuring" and oppose cuts to safety net programs like Meals on Wheels and heating assistance. Eliminate "gay panic" tactic for criminal defendants

Legislative Counsel's Digest: A "gay panic" or "trans panic" defense allows a criminal defendant to claim that the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity provoked them to violence. This outrageous tactic sends the message that violence against members of the LGBT community is understandable or acceptable. These defense tactics also hurt survivors and loved ones of victims by asking the jury to find that the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity excuses the defendant's actions. AB 2501, the first bill of its kind in the nation, eliminates "gay panic" and "trans panic" as a tactic for criminal defendants, ensuring that attacks on members of the LGBT community can be seen for what they are.
