Gary Bauer on Government Reform

2000 Republican Primary Candidate for President

Appointing liberal to Supreme Court is a “colossal mistake”

Q: Would you have appointed David Souter to the Supreme Court?

BAUER: President Bush made a colossal mistake by putting a justice on the court that is a reliable vote for Clinton. We can never afford to make another mistake like that.

Bush: I’m the only one on the stage who’s appointed judges. And my judges strictly interpret the Constitution. And that’s what I hope all of us would do. The bench [is not a] place from which to legislate. My dad can defend himself.

Wife Carol would promote traditional women’s roles

Carol Bauer , who is working as a part-time fund-raiser & surrogate speaker for her husband, says traditional is good - so good that she would use the offices of the White House to promote a better understanding of women’s roles in society and elevate the status of full-time homemaker. “The woman who chooses, for a season of her life, to take time off, be home to advise and counsel her children. shouldn’t be looked down upon,” said Mrs. Bauer.

Large donations buy access and are “corrupting”

Large contributions from either big labor or big business to the two political parties are corrupting. It’s one thing for somebody to donate $1,000, which is the Federal limit, but when a corporation or a union can write a two million or a five million check to the Republican Party or to the Democratic Party, we all know that that buys access that no average American can meet. So I will support having campaign reform that gets at the special interest in both parties. I think we need to do it.

Bureaucracy means saying “no” to bad ideas 90% of the time

Many of you may know that I was undersecretary of Education under Ronald Reagan and was in charge of a $17 billion budget and had about 17,000 bureaucrats working for me. And I have to tell you, it was an incredibly eye-opening experience. Those bureaucrats were good people, but I spent about 90 percent of every day saying “No” to just really bad ideas.

Restrain and reverse liberal judicial activism

Judges have increasingly legislated from the bench their personal notions of the good society, rather than apply the laws and the Constitution as written. This pattern of judicial activism, which has transformed the federal courts into engines of social liberalism, must change. [I would] appoint judges who will read and honor the plain words of the Constitution and the statutes. Where necessary, I will support legislation to restrain the judicial branch from exceeding its constitutional authority.

No campaign contributions from Hollywood

Bauer called for both Republican and Democratic parties to stop taking campaign contributions from the entertainment industry. He said those “Hollywood moguls and corporations” are “laughing all the way the bank with the millions that are being made from the sludge they are pouring into the cultural stream that our kids are being exposed to.”
