Vladimir Putin on Government Reform

Claimed elections were free and fair, held openly

Putin praised last week's parliamentary elections as "free and fair", while more than 1,000 people gathered in Moscow to protest against the results of the polls that were overshadowed by mass accusations of fraud. "The elections themselves were held openly and in strict accordance with the law," Putin said. He pointed to the fact that a new, fifth force is now represented in the parliament with the New People party as evidence of a democratic election process.

Barred opponents from running, charges of election fraud

Putin's party has won a parliamentary majority following an election marred by reports of fraud. With almost all of the votes counted, the United Russia party had won nearly 50% of the vote, marking a slight drop in support from the previous election. Mr Putin's biggest critics were barred from running, and there were reports of ballot stuffing and forced voting. Russia's electoral commission rejected claims of widespread irregularities.

Increased regulations of non-government organizations

In December 2020, President Vladimir Putin signed a package of laws tightening regulations on non-governmental organizations, public gatherings and media censorship. It is one of the elements marking a new quality in the Kremlin's domestic policy: Russian authoritarianism has de facto abandoned the pretense of democratic procedures in favor of increased control and repression.
