Matt Gaetz on Gun Control

Infringing on 2nd Amendment rights is an attack on freedom

[On H.R.8, "Bipartisan Background Checks Act," imposing background checks on firearm transfers between private parties, which passed the House of Representatives 227-203-1 on 03/11/2021]: The Biden administration plans to publish model "red flag" laws to inspire state legislators to restrict their citizens' constitutional rights to own firearms. If pistol braces, ghost guns, and red flag laws weren't enough reasons for concern, congressional Democrats continue to push their anti-gun bills in the 117th Congress. Evidenced by H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, House Democrats are slowly and steadily chipping away at the freedoms enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. One of the most pro-gun members of the Florida Legislature

When it comes to protecting our right to bear arms, there has been no greater champion than Matt. One past President of the NRA has called Matt "one of the most pro-gun members of the Florida Legislature." Matt successfully sponsored legislation banning local governments from infringing on our 2nd Amendment rights, and led the fight to bring Open Carry to Florida. When many across the nation called for the repeal of Florida's Stand Your Ground Law, Matt led the fight to keep the law in place and preserve our right to defend our homes and families. Matt killed all taxes on gun club memberships and passed legislation stopping insurance companies from discriminating against gun owners. As our Congressman, Matt will take on the anti-gun special interests to allow reciprocity of concealed weapon permits between states and will fight any attempt to chip away at our 2nd Amendment rights.

Supports open carry and Stand-Your-Ground

I've been A+ rated by the NRA year after year. In the Florida Legislature, I fought to pass Open Carry, protect Stand Your Ground, stop the expansion of Obamacare in our state, protect religious liberty, and always stand on the side of life. Thanks to my record, I was named the "Defender of Liberty" by the American Conservative Union.

National cross-state standard for concealed carry.

Gaetz co-sponsored H.R.197&S.845

Establishes a national standard for the carrying of concealed firearms (other than a machinegun or destructive device) by non-residents. Authorizes a person who has a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm in one state and who is not prohibited from carrying a firearm under federal law to carry a concealed firearm in another state:

Strongly opposes restrictive gun laws.

Gaetz opposes the AFA survey question on gun control

The American Family Association Action Voter Guide asked if candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'More restrictive gun control laws are needed to protect public safety.' American Family Association Action (AFA Action) produces the online "iVoterGuide" for selected state and federal races. The mission of AFA Action is to inform and mobilize individuals to strengthen the biblical foundations of America.

Opposes gun-control legislation.

Gaetz opposes the PVS survey question on gun control

The Project Vote Smart Voter Guide inferred how candidates would respond to the question, 'Guns: Do you generally support gun-control legislation?' Project Vote Smart notes, "in response to the increasing unwillingness of candidates to answer issue questions, Project Vote Smart has researched Congressional candidates' public records to determine candidates' likely responses on certain key issues. These issue positions, from the year 2016, are provided [for candidates who] refused to provide voters with positions on key issues covered by the 2016 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their parties and advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads."
