Q: How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

A: Many of the recommendations in the Simpson-Bowles bi-partisan commission such as raising the retirement age, and adjust the benefit formula, could serve as steps towards ensuring social security is solvent for future generations. Further, the funds in the social security accounts should not be used for other spending priorities.

Go after entitlements, but others besides Social Security

Waltz said Republicans "have to go after entitlements," which he said are 70% of the budget. He talked about how political will has been lacking, but he views deficit reduction as a national security issue. When [campaign opponent] Ward suggested there was daylight between the two over the issue, calling Social Security a "solemn promise to seniors," Waltz quickly jumped in to say he wasn't necessarily talking about cutting Social Security, adding, "There are all kinds of other entitlements."
