Reno avoids speaking about specifics of her health reform plans. She focuses on the big picture-adequate preventative care for all, especially children. She complains that Medicaid cuts off coverage for low-wage parents trying to work their way up
from poverty. "Something is terribly wrong with a nation that says to a person of 70 that you can get an operation that will extend your life by three years, and tells the child of a working poor person that you can't get preventative medical care."

"You can trace so many behavioral problems back to lack of preventative health care." Talk of family and health are traditionally the province of the department of Health and Human Services. The nation's top cop is expected to talk law and order.
Her experience with welfare moms, deadbeat dads, and crack babies developed in her a holistic approach to crime prevention. She became an early advocate for President Clinton health care reform plan and served on Hillary Clinton's health care task force.
