Mike Johanns on Immigration

Secretary of Agriculture; previously Republican NE Governor

Secure the border, provide no amnesty

My 5-point plan on illegal immigration is: secure the border, provide no amnesty, implement an effective employment verification program so employers only hire legal U.S. residents, those here illegally must go back to their home country and re-enter this country lawfully and if an illegal immigrant commits a serious crime while here, they forfeit the privilege of citizenship.

Secure our borders; no amnesty; verifiable job enforcement

Ending illegal immigration is critically important to our nation’s security and our collective commitment to the rule of law. Our actions to end illegal immigration must be grounded in principle. We must secure our borders. There must be no amnesty for illegal immigrants. We must secure the work place with a verifiable enforcement program and sanctions for employers who knowingly hire illegal workers. And there must be no preferential treatment for those who have come to America illegally.

Federal government should deal with criminal repatriation.

Johanns adopted the National Governors Association policy:

Finally, the Governors are concerned about the large number of deported felons that are returning to the United States. A significant number of the criminal alien felons housed in state prisons and local jails are previously convicted felons who reentered the United States after they were deported. The Governors urge the federal government to provide sufficient funds for proven positive identification systems, like the Automated Fingerprinting Identification System (AFIS), to allow for the expanded use of these systems in the rest of the nation.
